Hotel/Neighborhood London

Sorry this has probably been asked a million times, but I am totally overwhelmed with the number of neighborhoods and hotels in London. I'm going Monday to Sunday in November, looking for a nice/safe neighborhood close to public transit that easily gets you everywhere (I'm visiting friends north and south, going to Oxford, generally wanting to see everything I can). I would like to be central, but not surrounded by McDonalds type establishments, and would be fine with quaint or residential, as long as there are a few coffee shops or restaurants nearby. For hotel, I want clean and modern/updated, I like a hotel breakfast but it's not necessary, and do not want AirB&B/apartment. I'm in the less expensive price range - maybe $200-$250/night? Is that reasonable for something decent? If not, I can be a bit flexible. Any suggestions for hotel/neighborhood/tube station welcome! Thank you.

Well, your best bet is to look at the Premier Inn chain of budget hotels. They are recommended time and time again on here. You will be able to get somewhere in budget. I often stay in Southwark. There are I think 3 different PI locations there. It’s south of the river but you can walk to the West End in about half an hour or so should you desire plus good tube connections. Lots of restaurants and bars.

Bloomsbury, Soho ( the theatre district), and Covent Garden are all close in to central London attractions. If you look on Booking.com and click a Bloomsbury hotel and then click the map showing where the hotel is located— other hotel’s prices in the vicinity will be displayed. This map is a great tool to shop for accommodations.

Our go-to place for the past several stays in London has been Mike and Wendy’s B&B at 122 Great Titchfield Street, which is in the Fitzrovia neighborhood, close to the British Museum, and just north of Soho and just east of the great Marylebone neighborhood. Closest Tube stations are Goodge Street and Great Portland Street, where you can easily connect within the Tube network, as well as get to trains to/from Oxford in a couple stops.

The street itself, and the surrounding area, has several good restaurants, cafes, and pubs. Many are classic or upscale British, and others are quality ethnic - Persian, Greek, Nigerian, Scandinavian, Portuguese, Italian, etc., etc.

Price, for London, is an exceptional value. Breakfast is brought to your room, per the order slip you check off the night before. There are just two rooms, one small and a nicer one a bit bigger. There’s a third “room,” but it’s an apartment with its own kitchen. See www.bb-london.co.uk .

Here’s another recommendation for Premier Inns. They are all over London, so you can pick the area you like and find a PI there. The thing I like them the most is that they are consistently good . You’re not going to find luxury or quaintness, but you will find a comfortable bed, good service, and cleanliness, all for for a very reasonable price.

If I were you, I would sit down and plan which trains you will need to take out of town, then figure out where you’ll be starting from in London and find the spot that’s closest to those stations. Then you can search for hotels, or just look for a Premier Inn close by. They are near most major train stations in London. Just Google “Premier Inn Paddington Station,“ or “Premier Inn Victoria Station.”
