We will have an early morning flight from Heathrow on a Monday morning in mid-October and are looking for hotel recommendations that are very close or actually at the airport.

Which terminal - it helps regarding the 'closeness' aspect.
We have stayed at the Renaissance London Heathrow Hotel, we used points to stay. Plus, Premier Inn has a hotel with direct access to Terminal 4. I haven't stayed there, but have stayed in other Premier Inn properties.
There's a Sofitel right at Terminal 5, where the transatlantic flights leave. Couldn't be more convenient, though expensive. I got a non-refundable night there for about $150 as I recall, well in advance. There are many other hotels near Terminal 5, and at or near other terminals.
I used the Premier Inn near T4 last September. I believe it's at least a 10-minute walk from the terminal, but it's along a covered walkway. And the rate for my single room was under 50 GBP. The place is relatively new, which is the only reason I can think of for such low rates at an airport hotel. The Yotel was more than twice as expensive when I checked, and there's no comparison in room size.
