My wife and I want to spend 5-6 days in Oxford in September, visiting the city and surrounding sights like Blenheim, Abingdon, and a sample of the Cotswolds if we can find a day tour. We won't have a car. We're looking for a hotel in the city, walking distance to the older colleges, Bodelian, Ashmolean, etc. Our budget is around GBP 150-200 for an ensuite twin room. And we need either an elevator (aka lift) or a room on the ground floor or perhaps a few steps up. My wife can do a few steps but not flights of stairs on a regular basis. What we've found on various websites is that close-in hotels tend to be in older buildings without elevators, while those with elevators tend to be out by the motorways where we'd be kind of isolated. Does anyone know of a hotel like we're looking for?
Both the Randolph and the Malmaison (a converted prison!) have lifts and are centrally located. They should come within budget if booked well in advance (like today!) through booking.com or similar.
Dick, any old building (hotel or not) is liable to have a few steps to get into the main entrance, with a ramp added at the side for wheelchairs. Depending how many "a few steps" are for your wife, it may be worth asking when you book a hotel.
Thanks to you all. I think we'll go with the Randolph, Malmaison, or Eastgate. The Old Bank also has a lift but it's beaucoup expensive. Looking forward to the trip.
