We stayed numerous times at the then Thistle in Victoria Station. I understand that it is now called the Grosvenor and has been recently renovated. It is a lovely old station hotel. VERY convenient for the tube and buses and the area is very nice. The lobby is really lovely with a lovely grand staircase! (there are elevators, too). There are some good restaurants and pubs in the area also. And at least one of London's excellent theatre's is within walking distance, but I don't know what is playing there right now. We also stayed once at the Paddington Hilton. Not quite as convenient location, though you have access to the tube and buses. It's just not as central, though a very good hotel. In addition we enjoyed the Edwardian Mountbatten in 7 Dials, but it too has been renovated and had a name change. It is now called Radisson Blu Edwardian Mercer Street Hotel. Very good for the Covent Garden /Neal's Yard area and within walking distance of lots of central London. And not too far from the Covent Garden Tube station. We haven't stayed at any of these in more than 7 years, though, so do check the reviews on Trip Advisor and other places.

We stayed at the Hotel Lancaster (4 stars) last year because it was part of our package .... we couldn't have afforded it otherwise. Very posh, located at Lancaster Gate, excellent service and terrific breakfast included.

We have stayed at the "Crowne Plaza Hotel", South Kensington. We have been there many years in a row. It is part of the IHG Hotel Group (Holiday Inn, InterContinetnal, etc.) You earn hotel points. The hotel is in a beautiful area. It is right across the street from the Gloucester Tube station. If you join their point system, you will earn points for other hotel stays. We used hotel points for all of our stays. It is one Tube stop away from Harrod's. Harrod's is a great place to eat in their food court or upstairs in their "Georgian Room". We also had afternoon tea in their Georgian Room. They also offer a great buffet lunch, until 3:30 PM, everyday. The hotel is in a lovely area of London. It is a short walk to Kensington Gardens/Hyde Park and a museum.
