Hotel in Hammersmith Area London

Hello All,

I will be staying in London for 4 nights in early October 2020. Trying to choose a decent boutique type hotel with good tube connections without being in the most touristy area. Found The Brook Green Hotel in the Hammersmith & Fulham area. This is a little ways out of the city center but it is a short walk to the Hammersmith Station on the District line, with a 30 minute tube ride into the city center . The hotel is reasonably priced with a good breakfast and it appears to be in a quieter neighborhood with more locals. Does anybody have any experience with this hotel or neighborhood?

Hammersmith is fine.

I stayed further out at the Richmond Premier Inn and enjoyed being in a suburb. Easy walk to the high street, lovely Richmond Park, the Thames. 25 minutes into London proper.

However I’ve been going to London since the 70’s so no need to be close to the city center.

Throughly enjoyable to be in the burbs. Be sure to visit the Dove pub on the river! Very nice walk along the Thames Path to the charming Hurlingham Books at Putney Bridge!

I’ve stayed at the Star and really like Hammersmith. Would stay there again. Easy walk to Tube, and there’s also a Tesco if you need a grocery.

I would definitely describe Hammersmith as meeting your criteria! In the streets away from the main roads are some pretty well-to-do homes.

While I haven't been recently, I can add as a recommendation visiting the Queens head pub in Brook Green. It has a great beer garden/garden bar. Also the pubs along the Thames at Hammersmith Bridge - The Dove and The Blue Anchor.

Also, don't get fixed on taking the tube into the city. The buses from Hammersmith are great. The number 9 is a great way to see the sites from overground rather than underground. It passes from Hammersmith down Kensington High St past the Royal Albert Hall, Harrods, Hyde Park corner, Piccadilly and terminates near Covent Garden. Richmond is also easy to get to by bus or tube. Barnes is another villagey area a short bus ride away (with several nice pubs). Or if you like walking, you can walk from Hammersmith Bridge down towards Putney alongside the river - with a number of pub stops available!

The area is fine and besides the District line, the Piccadilly line from Heathrow stops there as well.

Thank you all for the great suggestions! The area sounds perfect for our stay. I checked out the Star Hotel. Very good ratings and very cheap. That scares me a bit. Rachel, what are your thoughts since you stayed there?

I stayed at the Star in November 2017. As you can tell from photos, it's a townhouse hotel.

I booked via the hotel website but sent an email request for a smaller & less expensive room, which they were able to grant because the smaller room was available. I think it was 2nd or 3rd floor on the back of the hotel. Breakfast was on the lower level. Very nice. I can't recall if they had full English--seems like it was continental with a sideboard that had meats, cheeses, yogurts, but they would make toast to order. So, if eggs and bacon are important to you, I would confirm what they have for breakfast.

My experience was quiet. My room was decent size. The bathroom was small and shower stall is pretty small, but I expected that, so it was okay by me. I liked the neighborhood, and the manager and his staff were friendly to me. I took the daytime flight from IAD and was checking in after 10pm, and they were able to accommodate my arrival.

If you need bells and whistles, it may not be for you. If you just need the basics in a smaller hotel, I thought it was very good, and I agree with the positive reviews you'll see on Booking.com and TripAdvisor.
