Hi, I love to stay at "Youth Hostels" where ever I travel in the world.
There have been great 5 star locations, and there have been "won't go there again" locations.
I will be using public transportation during the first two weeks prior to the RST.

I'm going to guess RST is Rick Steves Tour. Osprey Fairpoint 40 in event of winning a prize please!

Lancaster Hall Hotel, run by the German YMCA. Has a 'youth wing' with basic accommodation (£40 single), and rooms with more facilities from £85.
Take a look at Meininger located on Cromwell Road at Queen's Gate. Have not stayed there but went in to look and it seems very nice with various accommodation choices--from single rooms to bunk type rooms. Your tube station would be Gloucester Rd and there is a Waitrose nearby. There is a statue of Lord Baden-Powell founder of the Boy Scouts in front of the hostel. Meininger has accommodations in several other cities with Amsterdam and Berlin being two of them. This is a great area to stay in. Victoria and Albert Museum a block or so away and some good pubs and restaurants nearby. Have a wonderful trip!
I really enjoyed my stay at Wombat's City Hostel a couple of years ago. It is quite close to the Tower Hill tube station so convenient for getting around. I found the staff to be friendly and the accommodations to be clean and comfortable.
I am a fan of YHA -- https://www.yha.org.uk
I've stayed in a number of their locations across England and in London I've enjoyed staying at both YHA St Pancras and St Paul's.
I will add my recommendation for the London Central hostel. I have stayed there and it is a good hostel. Good kitchen in the basement. Clean and easy to get around. Easy walk to at 3 tube stations including Oxford Circus.
