Homebase to visit Dartmoor National Park, Lost gardens of Heligan, Eden Project

Hello fellow travelers,

We are driving down from the Cotswolds and have three nights to spend in East Cornwall/Dartmoor area. I want to hike in Dartmoor and visit the Lost gardens of Heligran. When we leave we will head up to Stonehenge before hitting up Bath.
I am looking at Exeter because it's close to Cotswolds and Stonehenge. But I don't know how nice it is.
Plymoth looks nice, but it will take longer to get to and get out of.
I have no idea where to stay inside of Dartmoor it's self.

Looking for suggestions for base and any other must sees in that area.

Thanks

Hi, kittycate1, I'm heading to Cornwall and Devon in the spring of next year, and was looking for a base, so you might want to check out my thread here - there are lots of good recommendations for places to see and also places to stay. https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/england/need-help-deciding-on-a-cornwall-base-and-devon-base

I am staying in Falmouth for the Cornwall portion of my stay, but for Devon, I booked a place called Duchy House B&B that is located in Princeton, right in the middle of Dartmoor National Park. I haven't stayed there yet but it looks nice and got good reviews.

If you look at the thread above, another poster recommended The Three Crowns at Chagford, which is also located in Dartmoor NP.

ETA: One thing to consider if you have a car is to make sure that the place has parking available or nearby. I know the Duchy House does. With the Three Crowns, you have to park in a nearby car park, although I don't think it's that far.

We stayed at the Three Crowns at Chagford during our RS tour Best of South England tour. I can recommend this hotel.

Plymouth has an amazing waterfront but is also a big gritty city, and the post-war redevelopment of the city centre is kind of love/hate (I’ve heard haters call it Soviet-style).

Exeter’s a bit too far from Cornwall I’d say.

Maybe Tavistock would suit? It’s a really nice solid market town, full of interesting buildings and independent shops, plenty going on - but also very well sites for both Dartmoor and eastern Cornwall.

Chagford is extremely pretty too, but very small.
