My family is considering a trip to England next April/May for two weeks. We are hoping to find a small town that is close to the train from London, is cute, has gardens to explore, and is near walking paths. Anyone know of such a place? Thanks, Gail
Hello dawson.gail. You said "a small town that is close to the train from London". Well, that could be a town in county Kent, or St. Ives at the west coast of Cornwall, or other places in England. Do you wish to go to a small town that is at a specific maximum distance (or train travel time) from London ?
Castle Combe in Wiltshire - train to nearby Chippenham.
Good question - I think it would need to be 2-3 hours from London, as we are flying in from Toronto, and hoping to get to our destination in one day. I am not too familiar with the distances, so not sure what that includes/excludes. Gail
Why are you just assuming that you need to fly into London? Air Transat fly from Toronto to Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham & London (Gatwick ) - which is handy for the south east.
If flying into Birmingham, consider Shrewsbury. It has direct trains from Birmingham International (Airport) taking between 1 hour 10 minutes & 1 hour 36 minutes. You could take several day trips by train from Shrewsbury - such as to Portmeirion (near Porthmadog) on the NW coast of Wales (1 mile walk from Minffordd station); Chester; Cardiff; Hereford combined with Ludlow on way back. Sorry, but not many walks from Shrewsbury but it does have a nice park.

"Quaint" is the one word often used on these forums that annoys me no end.
