Holmfirth for an overnight (or two) for Summer Wine sightseeing

We will be flying in to London in a few months and would like to work in a jaunt out to the Holmfirth area to see filming locations of Last of the Summer Wine.

Many of the sites I would like to see are regionally dispersed and I understand there are no real public transit options.

I would like to know the best strategy for taking a train in to a nearby-ish town (with less hectic traffic than London) where we can hire/rent a car for a few days. I think this will help a lot. Any other advice welcome as well.

Thanks in advance!

I visited Holmfirth a number of years ago.

The closest town with a decent rail station and car rentals is Huddersfield. However, there is limited rail service at the station for the rest of the year due to construction.

The Huddersfield bus station is just a few minute walk from the train station where you can get a bus to Holmfirth, It's about 6.5 miles and will take just under a half hour by bus.

I took the Summerwine Magic Tour which takes you past filming locations both in Holmfirth and in the surrounding areas. I'm not sure if it's still running or if it is just closed for the winter.

There used to also be a Last of the Summer Wine Exhibition but it seems to have closed. It was a small museum with Last of the Summer Wine memorobilia. It was in the house next to where Nora Batty and Compo lived. But it seems to have closed.

I don't suggest staying in Holmfirth as the choices aren't great. If I was to do it again, I'd stay in Huddersfield. That's where the cast stayed during filming.

Thank you.

It appears there is an Enterprise car hire in Huddersfield. I would like to stay at Nora Batty's cottage but it is booked for the time we're there. Huddersfield it is!

Unfortunately the tour is no more as is the exhibition. I would like to see what I can (much of it based on this map) as this will probably be my last opportunity.

Much appreciated and cheers!

Another choice would be to take a train into Leeds and get a car there. Leeds isn't terrifically far from either Huddersfield or Holmfirth.

Many of the venues are some distance apart from each other and even several miles from both Holmfirth and Huddersfield. Are you aware of the Google map that has been created showing many of the venues? https://summerwine.net/index.php/summer-wine-locations Click on the big square map for the google map.
