Holding Both UK and USA passports.

Hi -

My wife is (hopefully) about to become a resident alien (this is really difficult these days, good people, gird your loins if you are going to try this). She currently holds both Thai and UK passports. My question: Should she eventually naturalize, which passports become invalid, if any? I understand that losing the right to have a passport may mean giving up citizenship.

Many thanks in advance,

Michael

It not clear in either your profile or your post where you or she lives.

Your post title is UK/USA.
Your post though is Thai/UK.

Can you elaborate please?

plenty of people are dual UK/US nationals so no problem there. except the US will chase you for taxes wherever you live in the world while the UK won't (what is it with the US obsession with taxes).

No idea about Thailand and dual citizenship but if she currently holds Thai and UK citizenship then it must be no problem.

You really need to get answers from government authorities and an immigration attorney. Whatever people may say on this forum may be accurate, but you have no way of knowing whether it is or not.

Many thanks to all of you. I think I get the picture. The Thai don't care if you have 300 passports. This I know from experience. Apparently it is possible, once naturalized, to have both UK/USA passports. We don't plan on working overseas. It's retirement time. But we are building a place in N. Thailand to spend part of the year. My wife, though, will work in both places while I put my feet up for the first time in 60 years.

I know this is Rick Stevens, but I know you folks travel everywhere. Expatriation in general? Clearly it is at an all time high and there are lots of traps out there.

Thanks again and Happy Trails,

Michael

Yes, I will consult an an immigration attorney to confirm. It only makes sense.

The reason the US “hounds you for taxes” is that historically a lot of very wealthy folks who spend most of thier time in the US and are US Citizens can easily afford to have a house located in a location that would tax them very little and they would be more then willing to claim that is were they live to avoid US taxes.
So if a billionaire can pay for a house someplace outside the US for less money then they save by avoiding US taxes why wouldn’t they? And then it gets very ugly when the average Joe figures out that said Billionaire is not paying US taxes on his Billions when the poor working person is paying on his 50k income.
Look at how many rich people live in Monaco. That is a beautiful city but having visited the area it is pretty obvious that the wealthy only live in Monaco (vs a few miles away with less traffic cheaper costs and at least as nice of views) because of the tax break.
Now picture the US when every millionaire or Billionaire can avoid US income taxes by simply renting a flat outside the US...
