Historic Royal Palace membership?

My 2 daughters (12 & 13) and I will be visiting London for the first time in June. We will be there for 5 full days (not including arrival and departure days). I am working on our itinerary and would appreciate some expert guidance. In terms of palaces, we know that we definitely will visit the Tower of London. Kensington Palace is also pretty high on the list of "must-sees". I figure we will have time to visit either Windsor or Hampton Court, but probably not both as we need to squeeze in a visit to Stonehenge and of course will visit many of the usual places (Westminster Abbey, British Museum, London Museum, etc.). Prior posts have suggested that Hampton Court is really well-liked by youth, perhaps more so than Windsor Palace.

So, I am considering buying a family membership for the Historic Royal Palaces (59 pounds) to save time on ticket lines and to save money on admissions. This would cover admission to the Tower of London, Hampton Court, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace, and Banqueting House (NOT Windsor).

I have not explored visiting Kew Palace and Banqueting House, but would appreciate comments on both (should we try and go?).

Has anyone bought this membership (Historic Royal Palaces)? Do you have comments on the worth? I did a search of the forum, but did not find much on this particular topic.

Thank you in advance for your comments!

The Historic Royal Palaces membership is not something anyone in our office has used, to my knowledge, after asking around with several people here. But, if you are particularly interested in palaces and think you will visit even just two of the sights included, it would be a good value. Since the Tower of London alone is 57 pounds for a family ticket, and the pass is 59 pounds for you and the children, that almost pays for itself right there. I think this is well worth it and I'll even pass this along to our book department so our researchers can consider putting information about the membership in our guidebook.

Thanks for your comments. I love that this idea may be worthy of inclusion in a future edition!

Apologies for the delay in responding. My husband and I purchased an Historic Royal Palaces membership for our trip to London in September, 2014. We knew we would be visiting both the Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace, and hoped to visit Banqueting House, and so we went for it. If I recall correctly, it saved us a little bit of money on the ticket admissions but we mainly were attracted by a bit of convenience and also flexibility. Also, we were happy to support these locations because it costs a lot of money to maintain them, and we are grateful we can visit. I think we received a small (10%?) discount in the properties' shops and restaurants.

Alas, we did not get to Banqueting House on our last visit, so I am determined to do it this time. I had previously been to the Tower of London but liked it just as much the second time as the first. Hampton Court Palace was fabulous and I would return. I have not been to Kensington or Kew so cannot comment.

My husband and I are returning to London in the fall of 2015 and will purchase another membership. Please let me know if you'd like any further information.

My husband and I also purchased the membership and definitely got our money's worth. We were in London for 10 days, so had more time to use it, but we visited the Tower (twice), Banqueting House (spent about 2 hours, it is not large, but was interesting), Kensington Palace and Hampton Court Palace. The 10% off was a nice perk. We saved money after 3 visits. If the individual admission prices add up to less than or close to the membership, it is definitely worth it. It did save some time in lines since you go right to the entrance, which is great at the Tower.

Stacey: where did you purchase your membership? In advance while in the U.S.? I am interested in making purchase but it looks like one must go to group sales office at Tower of London. My schedule has me visiting Kew Gardens/ Palace before any of other palaces and I cannot determine if I can purchase membership at Kew Gardens ticket kiosk. I appreciate guidance and tips regarding this topic.

Val, We did end up purchasing a membership ourselves. I did buy it at the group sales at the Tower of London. I saw I could have done the same at Hampton Court Palace. It was very easy to get at the different ticket offices of the various palaces. You should be fine purchasing it when you get to any of the palaces you wish to visit. It was a very quick process with a short form to fill out. Enjoy!
