Has anyone been on the Highclere Castle/Downtown Abbey Tour? Is one better than the other? Are there any decent small hotels near the subway stop where the bus tour begins?
There must be more than one company that does those tours. Presumably they start in London?
It is also possible to take the train to the town nearby and then a taxi to the castle, as I did.
Could you provide links to the specific tours?
What do you mean by “boys tour”?
Susan - that should be bus tour - apparently there is a tour from one of the tube stops to Highclere Castle. Have you been?
We are doing this tour in three weeks. Looks like it's all booked out though. And yes, we board the bus at the Gloucester Road tube station.
I did a small group tour in 2018 that started at Great Portland St tube station—first stop was Cogges Manor Farm, which was Yew Tree farm in the show, really interesting to explore the grounds and house. Then to Bampton, which doubled for Downton village and toured the church, with time to wander a while. Finally to Highclere by 12:30 where we were on our own for 4 hours. House admission included, and it was a lovely day to get something from the cafe for lunch and sit on the lawn, then walk the gardens. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this day, the guide was wonderfully informative and entertaining and the stops were just the right length of time and I loved seeing other places that were featured in the show.
Thanks Christine, no I haven’t. I’d like to but it hasn’t been open when I’ve been in England.
