This series , hosted by Penelope Keith , explores the lesser known villages of Britain , and is a wonderful armchair look at these lovely places . Whether you have been to Britain or are contemplating your first visit , this series is a must . Here is the one on The Cotswolds , but they are all delightfully infectious ! I hope those who watch will enjoy these travelogues - https://youtu.be/XvZOAtlaaUs
These programmes have already been shown peak time on British television. Good to see they are now on U-Tube for anyone to watch anywhere.
Unfortunately , we don't get nearly enough of great British TV here . The quality of it , is incomparable .
Steven thank you for posting this. I've just watched the first episode and am looking forward to watching the rest. I'm currently reading "The Village News" by Tom Fort, so this series makes a nice companion to the book.
Thanks Steven! I didn't know anything about this series. Really enjoyed the cotswold episode and will be checking out others!
Thanks for posting. This series is being telecast on our local PBS station: KERA 13, Monday's at 8 pm.
It was such a good series I've kept the episodes on my PVR for reference.
For those of you too young to remember Dame Penelope Keith DBE has been in some really excellent TV, amongst others as Margo Leadbetter in a show called The Good Life in England and something else I don't remember different in the US and as Audrey FForbes-Hamilton in To the Manor Born. I love her work.
Where there is a will there's a way.
Been addicted to British television shows since Alisdair Cooke hosted Masterpiece Theatre and I was glued to Upstairs Downstairs series in college.
I'm not an employee nor own stock but my college buddy who watched Upstais Downstairs with me told me about ACORN TV. I'm a huge fan now.
Small monthly charge but Ms Keith's Villages of Britain is on there as are such great British offerings as Vera, Inspector George Gently, Foyles War and a wonderful recently produced version of Witness For The Prosecution.
So if you love British Television take a gander. There are also some well done Austrailian produced offerings. Martin Clune fans will have far more than Doc Martin to enjoy.
This is very interesting, thank you. I adore Penelope Keith. Are any of the villages she explores accessible on a day trip from London via train? If so, which ones?
We too are huge fans of British tv. The end of Foyles War was a real disappointment. The link to you tube is appreciated. Thanks.
I think that BBC America/Canada show quite a lot of British programming. If you can find it, you might like the BBC series ‘Escape to the Country’ in which people look for homes in the countryside.
To Continental, some could be day trips, others not.
Love Escape to the Country! I watch it on Netflix. Shows real UK lifestyle! And some interesting local shops like a hundred years old sausage maker, agriculture such as a tea plantation in Scotland, and interesting historic locations. One was the mansion of an inventor who had the the first home powered by hydro- electricity; and many more you can visit that are not trod to dust by zillions of tourists on buses.
I haven't tried to find it for a week or more so if anyone knows where I can buy the Hidden villages on DVD please let me know. I could only find those not available in zone 1
A fair amount of the DVD programming from Britain is only available in region 2 , PAL format ( Europe ) . Since a large portion of my DVD library consists of British work ( movies , documentaries , etc ) , I solved the problem about ten years ago by purchasing a code free , region free DVD player . Even at that time is was only about $ 80 . Given my tastes in entertainment , it was a very worthwhile investment . Have a look here - https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_4_8?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=region+2+dvd+player+for+usa&sprefix=region+2%2Caps%2C137&crid=3S9XMQN7N66MA
The AcornTV catalogue has this series for sale in its documentary section. I can watch it PBS channel 9 on Tuesday nights at 10:00 pm. I'm not sure if you have the same access in Arlington. I think it was on also at 4:00 pm Mondays.
You can now watch ‘Escape to the Country’ on U-Tube:>

Just watched the Penelope Keith "North Yorkshire" program. What a treat!
Are the 'Escape to the Country' videos also travelogues?
Thank you, Steven! Most excellent! I enjoyed the YouTube video, and now I'm on to watch more of them!
Penelope Keith is an excellent host for these travelogues.
The ‘Escape to the Country’ programmes are about people purchasing homes in the countryside in the UK. They include background information about the areas depicted. Don’t the u-tube versions work outside the UK?
