I booked the Western Yorkshire Dales tour and the North York Moors tour. I am traveling solo and it is my first trip to England so I wanted to get my feet wet with a couple tours. The first tour ends 26 April and the second tour begins 3 May. Any suggestions on places to stay in between the 2 tours that would be along a train route from Sedbergh to Whitby?
Are you using the HF transfer taxi from Oxenholme to Sedbergh or making your own way there on the brand new public bus service?
If the latter I would suggest that you use the public bus which stops outside the HF house entrance.
That will take you straight to Penrith Bus and Railway Stations through the Eden Valley- a great journey. From Penrith train (or bus) to Carlisle, then train (or bus) to Hexham. Stay there to explore Hadrians Wall for however many nights, using the AD122 bus along the main part of the wall.
The Carlisle to Hexham bus is hourly and run with double decker buses, so you get great views. On the £2 bus tickets it is 3x£2 Sedbergh to Hexham, and 2 straight changes with no stress. You could build in time to explore Penrith and/or Carlisle on the way. Both have Castles and museums for instance.
Due to the Whitby train I am choosing Hexham, not Haltwhistle for your stay.
Then on transfer day take the 1156 train to Whitby, no changes, arrive at 1538. There are through advance fares on that train- which starts it's journey at Hexham.
If using the HF taxi to Oxenholme, then train Oxenholme to Carlisle, then train Carlisle to Hexham.
The other option I am looking at is that 26 April is a Friday. On a Friday only there is the Western Dales Bus S3 from Sedbergh at 0959 to Hawes, arrive 1032, also at 1203 and 1442.
So you could go to Hawes instead. There is then the bus down the bus down the valley from Hawes or the Little White Bus to Garsdale for main line rail connections.
On 3 May the LWB leaves Hawes at 0850 to Garsdale Station, train to Carlisle, then to Hexham for that through train to Whitby.

Thank you for your reply. As always, extremely helpful. I have booked HF transfers, it seemed like the way to go for me, although I do like the idea of the new bus service. I will take a look at Hexham and Hawes.
I wanted to post about HF Holidays before I booked them but I learned of their leap year sale just an hour before it ended. You have given me some good options. Thanks again!
I'm just pleased that someone got to take advantage of the sale. I posted that late as I only heard about it through a chance facebook notification.
isn31c I have been looking at HF Holidays after reading about them on this forum. I am starting my trip in Edinburgh 10-17 April, then HF Holidays' 3 day Northern Lake District 19-22 April and onto my Western Dales 22-26 April. Then I read your post about the sale and added the North York Moors. I'm sure the sequence of my holidays isn't the most logical but somehow I am sure I will love it. I fly out of Heathrow 22 May and was thinking of doing another HF Holidays or Rabies for Cornwall and Dorset since it is so much to cover without driving. I'm very excited about finally getting to explore England and Scotland. Your posts have helped me tremendously.
