Help with train travel/passes please :)

Hello again,
With thanks to your help I have completed our Itinerary in regards to accommodations booked and route plan.
We arrive London Heathrow Terminal 3 on Sept 8 and will take the train or bus to Bath. We will be departing Bath and renting a car in Bath Monday Sept 11 and dropping off on Sept 14 at Liverpool John Lennon airport as advised.

We plan on taking a train from Liverpool to York on September 16 then York to London (our accommodation is closest to Paddington Station) on Sept 19.
Researching the rail cards/passes as to best options/ rates at www.nationalrail.co.uk as well as other sites (Rick Steves).
* Oyster card is definitely one we plan to purchase as we will use it in London - are we also able to use the Oyster card on the trains from Liverpool-York-London?
*To do advance booking I believe I can't book until 12 weeks prior according to what I have read as the routes aren't out yet. My husband is 60 therefore he qualifies for a senior rail card however this may not be the card as the two together card is the same price. Is it worth purchasing either the two together or senior rail card?
I don't believe it is worth the cost of a rail pass (Britrail England/London) as we are only riding the train for 2 days, we will be doing day trips from London but possibly with tour groups (still fine tuning that part of the itinerary).

My apologies for the long rambling, if anyone has any advice or tips feel free to comment. Thank you in advance for your time.

Cheers,

KS

No.

Oyster is for use in London but it’s old technology and the cheaper option is to use contactless cards or devices.

It depends. If the savings justify the £30 each for the senior rail card for example it may be worth it.

You are correct.

Any reason for Paddington? Your train from York arrives at Kings Cross.

Wow thanks for the quick reply @stroudy60now that you mention it I have heard about the contactless cards, I will look into that. I guess I assumed the Oyster was able to be used as a contactless card.

Our hotel is closer to Paddington station, however when I was exploring the routes I saw that the train takes you to Kings Cross and I would need to transfer to another to get to Paddington Station. We will look into that ;)

Thanks for your help, its truly appreciated.

By contactless we mean credit or debit cards that you use to tap in and out of the tube and London rail system. These are linked to your credit and bank accounts.

They are also used to tap in on buses, but you don’t tap out on buses as they are a fixed fare.

Thanks @stroudy60,
I also just checked some fairs typing in days/times similar to when we would travel and there was a definite savings using the two together pass...basically pays for itself.

For the York to London journey tickets will be out 12 weeks ahead, if not sooner- LNER are very good like that, but Liverpool to York are often on more compressed timescales, especially as 9/16 is a Saturday, with likely engineering work.

Thanks @isn31c
LNER is what I noticed came up, it is confusing all the options..no idea there were so many ;)
Yikes, engineering work ..not sure I like the sound of that, however we are at their mercy.
