Help with May trip itinerary

Oenter code herepen to all thoughts. Regarding our trip that is fast approaching
Arrive Southampton apr 30. Will spend 1 night in area .
Travel,by train, to London may 1-5. Doing this first part of trip as hotel prices seem to rise by mid month.
We will have 7/10 days after and hope to travel Cotswolds and bath and............possibly cross into Wales/Cardiff OR ?base a few days in Dorset or Devonshire

My husband loves all things castles, history. Need to decide where (out of London ) we can best pick up car . Can leave from gat wick or Birmingham--to avoid heathrow.

We like to visit small towns, meet locals and not move every night
What is the most feasible plan. Thanks in advance

I'm not sure what your first sentence refers to, but have a few comments.

I'd have to spend some time working on the overall Itinerary, but given the places you want to visit I'd suggest something like this.....

  • One night in Southampton
  • Travel by train to London (5 nights?)
  • Travel by train or National Express coach to Bath
  • Pick up car in Bath
  • Visit Cotswolds / Wales / Dorset / Devonshire as you wish

Before commenting on where to drop-off the car, it would help to have some idea of where you're going after your U.K. visit? That will have a bearing on which airport to use. Also, could you elaborate on your desire to "avoid Heathrow". I was through there again in September and was pleasantly surprised at the how well things went.

It would also help to know where you're from, since your profile doesn't indicate a home location. I wasn't sure how comfortable you'd be driving on the "correct side" of the road. One other comment in planning your time is that I've found that driving in the U.K. always takes longer than even the best laid plans.

BTW it's Devon, there is no such place as "Devonshire" (yes, I know it has a Duke and Duchess, but like "The Queen of England" there's no such thing).

Sorry about that first sentence. It is not understandable is it???

Just wanted to say I appreciate all comments.
We are from US and feel we will be able to handle driving if we take it slow and watch carefully.
We mainly avoid heathrow because of high taxes on airline tickets when leaving from there. Birmingham is almost 1/2and gat wick less too.
But coming from a small town, smaller airport - it is easier for us.
We will be heading home after our England trip

Sorry My map, older map from national geographic, indicates Devonshire between Cornwall and Dorset .

We will definitely look closely at the itineries suggested. Great planning by all! Thanks so very much

While the taxes and landing fees may be high at Heathrow, the big question is whether you can find flights from Birmingham back to the U.S.

One other other comment about driving in the U.K. is that a GPS or at least a good map would be advisable. You may want to do some research on using roundabouts and the traffic signs and road markings that you will encounter.

It seems that you are doing a lot of price avoiding. In order to do that you are backtracking and going way out of your way to save some money. But all that backtracking and using Birmingham Airport to avoid London air prices can cost a fortune in extra rental days or train tickets, to say nothing of the time value of money. Or put another way, you may find you are wasting time - your most valuable commodity, especially on such a short visit.

If you need an extra hotel night in Birmingham to make a morning flight there, what does that do to your budget? How much are you budgeting for the train ride? Slow and cheap on London Midland or fast and expensive on Virgin?

If you land at Southampton why not do Bath which is quite close before you get to London? If you have to backtrack how much of the train fare (you don't want to drive in London or Bath, trust me - especially Bath on the opposite side of the road with all their steep narrow hills, parallel parking and manual transmission) could have you spent on a nicer London hotel or one which fits your schedule?

May 1 is May Day, May 2 is the Early May Bank Holiday. That weekend is likely to be crazy busy with traffic both on the roads and on the trains. And trains may be disrupted by holiday engineering works - they usually are.

Remember that many speed limits are not posted and you need to know them based on the conditions. Many times the information you need is painted on the road - sometimes clearly, sometimes not - and you may or not have supporting signs as you are used to.
