Help with 6 day itinerary that must include Chatsworth, Cotswold, Highclere

Hello,
Planning to visit England in May next year. Group of 5 want to visit these three locations.
We will arrive in London and go from there.
My initial thoughts were:
Chatsworth - 1 night
Broadway - 3 nights (will go to Bath and villages with a tour guide while staying in Broadway as base)
Highclere or Oxford if Highclere is unavailable.- 1 night

What is the best way to travel from area to area? Aside from the hired tour guide for Cotswold, we'll be on our own for public transportation.
Is 3 nights to visit Cotswold area (including Bath) enough time or too much time?
Is this the best order / use of our time in England?
Any suggestions for a Chatsworth area B&B?

Thank you for your feedback
Claudia

I would drive to Chatsworth area after arriving in London then drive to Broadway after visiting Chatsworth in the morning. Stay 2 nights in Broadway and then drive to Bath early am ( as Bath is over an hour to 2 hours from Broadway depending on traffic ) then while traveling to Highclere stop in Lacock and some of the other villages in the area. I have traveled the area a bit so feel free to message me with any questions.

I think that this itinerary pushes the limit , but here are some thoughts ; First , are you considering a car ? This would make things easier in many respects , but comes with issues relative to driving in the UK . Don't get me wrong , I'm a big fan of driving in the UK , but it's not for everyone . I would also reject the idea of coming off a long flight ( 10 hours , say ) and then getting behind the wheel to drive about four hours to the Peak District . To have any chance of doing this , I would completely reverse the order - fly open jaw into Heathrow and home from Manchester . From Heathrow to Newbury for overnight and see Highclere the next day . From there on to Bath ( by rail - 2 hours ) To the Cotswolds by car , the area ( 2 hours ) works , without a car , Moreton in Marsh is the only rail stop in the area , no rail in Broadway . A car is a virtual necessity in the Cotswolds , but from Moreton you can access Chipping Campden and Stow on the Wold , for example , using local buses . By rail from Moreton , figure 5 hours to Matlock on the edge of the Peak , and then cab or bus to Bakewell or Baslow , the towns nearest the Chatsworth estate . Buses connect these towns to the entrance to Chatsworth . Also , you will need a FULL day at Chatsworth , just to begin to do it justice . Go to National Rail to work out Matlock to Manchester and fly back . This saves you a lot of useless backtracking , you will be going in a direct line . Hope this helps , and watch this video on Chatsworth to get a good feel for this magnificent place . http://youtu.be/rNP6zTv28kM

Thank you for your suggestions.

I've been reviewing the travel forum here and have read that driving is the best way to explore the Cotswolds. Knowing that all my group wishes to avoid driving in England, we've hired a private car tour guide for the Cotswold area that includes Bath.

But reversing the order and changing our departure destination is something we will consider.

Will appreciate any other ideas on public transportation between London-Chatsworth-Broadway.

Thank you,

See http://www.chatsworth.org/plan-your-visit/finding-us for the closest train station and bus info for Chatsworth house.

From Moreton-in-Marsh train station to Broadway, p. 530 of Rick Steves' England suggests bus #21, operated by www.johnsonscoaches.co.uk; don't expect bus service on Sundays.

See http://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/britain-rail-passes for more about British train tickets and BritRail England passes (with great discounts for 5 traveling together).

Since Highclere has the greatest risk of missing due to ticket unavailability, as it is in great demand due to the Downton madness, and it is very important to you, it seems to make sense to base decisions on those tickets.

Luckily places in the Cotswolds and Chatsworth are very easy to walk up to and get tickets at the gate.
