I will be in London in October and want to spend 3 or 4 days in York and then 3 or 4 days in Dublin. If I travel by train and ferry (not flying) and go from London to York what is the best travel plan to get from York to Dublin? Do I need to go back to London to get to Dublin? Any help is appreciated.
Leeds- Bradford has Ryanair flights to Dublin.
Can be as low as £20 return I just looked
Or just train to Manchester , where ryanair also runs flights to Dublin.Likely similar travel time from York
Train schedules will show you the connections, such as a 7:50 departure connecting through Manchester and Holyhead to Dublin Ferryport. www.nationalrail.co.uk sells combined tickets.
I have a question regarding Ryanair. I have been checking out their prices and they seem very cheap but I have also been reading some horror stories from passengers. Would you recommend them?
Check out the Man in Seat 61 explanation of the various sail-rail options from the UK to Dublin -- http://www.seat61.com/Ireland.htm#.VfXUQn0pDMJ
He explains it in detail and the sail-rail and York to Dublin is currently £39.
I also used the Virgin Trains website for my sail-rail purchases last year -- https://www.virgintrains.co.uk .
I flew into and home from Dublin and used the sail-rail to travel between Ireland and England. It was one of many enjoyable highlights of my trip. Going again next summer and using the sail-rail service between Harwich and Hoek van Holland.
We took Ryanair from Lutin airport to Edinburgh, expecting a nightmare. Be prepared to follow their exact details as far as carry-on luggage. It is very barebones but cheap.
Ryanair have been definitely trying to improve their customer service recently, but be very sure when you book on their website that you read ALL the conditions, especially involving luggage weights and the need to print out your own boarding pass at home.
