Heathrow transportation to Bloomsbury area of London

How to get from Heathrow Airport to Bloomsbury area hotel (near British Museum) with suitcase? Any idea of taxi cost? I'm 74 years of age and will be traveling alone. Thanks.

You have several options. A taxi will cost anywhere from £75-110+. The Heathrow Express train goes to Paddington. From there you would likely want a taxi to the hotel. There is the Elizabeth line, to Tottenham Court station. Or the Picadilly Underground line to Russell Square station. Which of the latter 2 is closer would depend on where exactly your hotel is.

The other choice is a car service. They meet you as you exit customs. Walk you to your car and then drive you direct to your accomodations. These are pre-booked and usually less expensive than a taxi. You will know the price when you book. They also help with luggage.

Two companies popular on this board are "Blackberry Cars" and "Just Airports."

Your hotel is two blocks from the Russell Square underground station which is on the Piccadilly Line from Heathrow. It's a direct service with no changes.

However, there are steps at the Russell Square station so you would have to carry your suitcase up steps.

I forgot to ask regarding the steps. Are there a great number of steps? Any escalators? I remember reading where London used their underground system as bomb shelters during WWII because the system was so far underground.

The are steps all around the underground system. TfL is trying to install lifts to allow step-free access but it's not always possible on infrastructure that over 100 years old.

From memory, at Russell Sq station there are about 15 steps from the platform level to the bottom of the lift shafts and from there you get the lift directly to street level - there may be an odd step at the top but I don't think so.

The Elizabeth line stations have escalators and elevators to get you from platform level to the street. I prefer the Lizzie for trips to and from Heathrow. Less cramped and more places where I can keep my bag out of the way. I would get out at Tottenham Court road and walk or take a taxi. You night also have a local bus for the last leg.

Have a great trip

I second what Rocket said. Take the Elizabeth Line to Tottenham and walk or taxi from there. Assuming your luggage is manageable? I do remember some steps at the tube station but it seems like that was only coming in from street level. My friend and I (both 67) traveled with rolling bags (spinners) and managed getting to Montague on the Gardens just fine. Our hotel was right next to the British Museum (and we LOVED it!).

That’s assuming your bags aren’t too bulky. I highly recommend packing lightly.

P.S. I just looked up your hotel and it’s directly behind where we stayed. You’ll love the area. And if you prefer to take the tube to Holborn Station then your walk to your hotel will be very short. If you like Turkish food, the food at Antalya Restaurant was excellent.

Tottenham is a completely different place to Tottenham Court Road station so don't whatever you do ask anyone the way to Tottenham. There are no stops from the Elizabeth Line station at TCR to the street.

Thank you, John, for the correction to my tube stop name. I knew what I meant but that doesn’t mean everyone else does!

It's unlikely that anyone would end up in Tottenham as the Elizabeth Line doesn't go there but you can't be too careful. Someone could innocently ask a local and be directed into all manner of problems!
