Heathrow to Windsor: reserve a taxi or not?

Hi,

Traveling to Windsor from Heathrow and back with a total of 6 people. Would it be advisable to reserve a taxi in advance or is it just as easy to pick one up upon my arrival at Heathrow? Any difference in price? Any suggestions on taxi cab services. Would also need a taxi back to Heathrow and are those easy to find if I don't reserve a taxi back?

Thanks!

No, it's not necessary to reserve a taxi, if you go out to the taxi stand there will be taxis out there. It's easy getting a taxi in Windsor.

If you take a London taxi off the rank you will pay dearly for the convenience and for 6 you will need 2. Book a minibus with a Windsor private hire firm. Coming back you could just take local cabs if you don't want to be tied down.

Evidently my reply on your Windsor post hasn't deterred you from attempting to visit Windsor during your layover!

There are two considerations regarding a taxi from Heathrow. Taxi's are abundant at the airport and you can simply walk out of the terminal and pick one up straight away however you will be paying for the convenience, quite significantly.

Yes you can pre-book a minicab to collect you, just make sure that there are no waiting charges as you have no idea of potential delays. Most minicab drivers will wait on the outskirts of the airport and will monitor your flight's progress online, they will then make an educated guess as to when you are likely to pass through customs.

You may consider asking the driver to wait and return you to the airport as there's every chance that it'll be an almost instant turnaround! ; )
