Heathrow to St. Pancras on Monday

We are landing at 10:10 am Monday at Heathrow and are staying close to St. Pancras. Many on the forum say the tube is simpler than the Heathrow Express, and on Monday, we'll want simple. How do we get to the Tube from the Terminal? Which line do we take? Should we buy an Oyster card or use a credit card? Thanks in advance!

Piccadilly line. Use your Credit card.

CAVEAT: Monday is the Queen’s funeral so you’ll need patience as the tube, road travel, etc will be crowded and staffing will experience shortages.

God Save The Queen.

Transport for London can help you plan your travel in the city throughout your stay. Google Maps offers a similar service if you want comparisons, but without as much advice on costs.

Do you mean this Monday, two days from now?

If so, are you aware of the State Funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II? It will be just after you touch down and Transport for London (TfL) is warning of major crowds, tube stations closing, and a generally difficult day. There will be heads of state from around the world and that will cause its own congestion.

I'd strongly suggest private transport this Monday. It will cost a lot and be very slow but your driver should know about how to avoid the worst of it.

If its for another Monday, then Tube is fine or Heathrow Express or Elizabeth Line plus taxi.

Easiest way to get from airport to St Pancreas is definitely the Underground. The signage at the airport is fantastic and you can't miss the station. I used it all the time when I stayed in London/Kings Cross.

That said, this Monday I'd arrange a private car which probably will be more expensive as it is a Bank Holiday and the Queens funeral with lots of people in central London.

I would have thought with the Queen's funeral the Underground would be the better option in view of your landing time

We are very aware of the timing of the Queen's funeral. We received an email that our flight might be cancelled, but our flight's timing apparently made the cut. Thanks for your help, everyone.

If it were me, I would plan to take the tube but I would check the status updates after arrival and before I got on the tube. If it looks like there are any problems, you could choose alternate transportation, You will be getting on at the first stop, so the train won’t be full to start.

For the tube, just follow the signs. It is very clearly marked. I prefer using an Oyster card so I can keep my credit card in a secure place. Since the Oyster card fee is now non-refundable, it may not be a good value proposition if you don’t expect to return to London.

Heathrow is indeed cutting many flights so as to provide a quiet atmosphere for the funeral and committal. I'm glad that your flight is early enough..

I'd expect that you'll leave Heathrow during the actual funeral and as the tube takes just about an hour to Kings Cross St Pancras you'll get more crowding as you approach central London as the funeral will have ended. That's when TfL projects the greatest crowds. What starts out as an empty train may not remain so.

The nation will observe a two minute silence at the end of the funeral, just before noon. Expect it to be announced. And observed.

Normally, I would suggest the tube. One hour. No changes. Least expensive. Signage is easy at every terminal.

However.......this Monday will be a little different. Okay, a lot different. If you take the tube (Piccadilly Line) you have to go through central London and pass through a few of the most crowded stations.

So, instead, take the Heathrow Express or Elizabeth line to Paddington. From there transfer to either the Circle Line or the Hammersmith & City Line to Kings Cross/St. Pancras. (Or just grab a taxi at Paddington)

It will cost a bit more but you are not traveling directly through the main area of the funeral crowds.

Or, you might just arrange for a private transfer at a fixed rate. it's door to door.

Surely the funeral crowds will all be on the streets, and the tube will be nearly deserted during the funeral.

Very likely. But as soon as its over everybody will be leaving town or moving to a different part.

With a 10:10 arrival, with 60 to 90 minutes in the airport sue will be heading into Central London at around 11:15 to 11:45, arriving at Kings Cross St Pancras around 12:15 to 12:45.

The tube won't be nearly deserted by then.

Think people are overstating any possible problems
You will getting onto a fairly empty underground train at Heathrow and travelling to St Pancras direct
It may get busier nearer central London but can't see how this will cause you any grief

If you're not doing anything else on Monday and in no real hurry, figure out the best route using the tube and go with that ...
