Heathrow to Greenwich -- transportation and pubs

We are ending a trip in England at the end of April, we and will be staying at Heathrow for two nights. I know it's not ideal, but I want to be at Heathrow the night before our flight out, and I don't want to have to switch hotels. We've decided to spend our full day in London in Greenwich. What is the best way to get from Heathrow to Greenwich? I have tried to figure this out myself, but I'm confused about the various train and tube stations. We are fine with walking up to a mile or so to get to the sights once we reach Greenwich, as long as it's pleasant walking (meaning sidewalks and not excessively crowded). Also, if anyone can recommend a good pub or restaurant for a casual lunch or dinner, that would be great. Thanks.

Which Heathrow accommodation?

Do you have a tap credit or debit card?

Will be about an hour and 30 minutes to Greenwich via public transport.

I’m old school still use an Oyster card.

Guess you’d take the Elizabeth line to Farringdon and then a DLR train to Maze Hill….exit and walk to the Observatory. Pathways are marked and there is an incline.

Others forum members may have better directions to suggest.

EDIT: Plume of Feathers pub

Maze Hill isn't a DLR station- it is a South Eastern trains and Thameslink suburban station.

If you were going to the Observatory I'd be inclined to take the Elizabeth Line to Faringdon then Thameslink to Maze Hill. Tube to Cannon Street, then South Eastern trains is another possible way.

But if you were going to the Cutty Sark, the Maritime Museum and the centre of town the Elizabeth Line to Canary Wharf, then the DLR to Cutty Sark would be my choice.

Truth is there are multiple ways to get there, all "right", it's preference.

I might even suggest tube to Westminster or Tower Hill then Uber boat/Thames Clipper to Greenwich- at least in one direction.

Thank you both! This is really helpful.

We are staying at the Hilton by Terminal 4, and we have a tap credit cards, which worked really well when we were in London last year. We will probably try to see the Cutty Sark, Observatory and Maritime Museum, if that's not too much for one day. If the weather is particularly nice, we might skip the museum in favor of spending more time outdoors.

It sounds like the Elizabeth line to Faringdon and Thameslink to Maze Hill will work well. We might try the boat back for a change of pace.

I will look into Plume of Feathers. Thanks again.

Terminal 4 (and the 4 hotels, Hilton, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn Express and Premier Inn, attached) are served by the Elizabeth Line which ends at T4 (but not directly by Heathrow Express) right below the terminal so your plan looks good to me.

If you want to make an interesting day of it I would take Stuart’s advice about the tube to Westminster and a boat one way. Then the other way take the DLR from Cutty Sark to Canary Wharf and then the Elizabeth line back to T4. The DLR takes an interesting elevated route to Canary Wharf. There is a little walk between the two stations but it will give you a view of a completely different side of London.

Whatever you do don’t miss the Painted Hall in the Royal Naval College. London’s answer to the Sistine Chapel - it’s quite stunning but doesn’t take a huge amount of time to see.
