Arriving at Heathrow around midnight and leaving from Gatwick early the next morning. Any suggestions on the best/cheapest way to make the connection?

What time does your flight actually arrive and what time does it depart from Gatwick? Also where are you flying into Heathrow from?

If it's the American flight landing at 1045, you may have enough time to take one of the last tubes to Victoria or St Pancras, then the train to Gatwick. They run all night.
The National Express coach site is down, so I can't see what times they run between Heathrow and Gatwick.
You could also consider a pre-booked car service - that might be quick during that time of night.
Others may have more options.

National Express runs hourly in the early hours at 23:55, 00:55 & 01:55. 90 mins scheduled time likely to be reliable that time of day (night).

I'd also suggest the National Express Coach. They're large and the seats are comfortable, and the coach depot at LHR is easy to find (although as I recall there may have been construction in progress when I was there in September, so things may have changed). You can pre-purchase your ticket online if desired.
