I’m sure this must be covered elsewhere here, but what is the best process for getting from Heathrow ( terminal 4) to Bath? Into London via Express or Elizabeth line then back out or to Reading ( bus?) from Heathrow and then train to Bath or something else altogether?

We used the National Express coach back in 2017...very easy. Reserve ahead.

The best (and easiest) way is a private car service. Yes, it will cost a bit, but after a long hour flight, being sleepy, jet lagged, and on unfamilar turf, nothing is better than having a driver meet you and wisk you to the hotel.
We used a private car service based in Bath to go from there to the Bristol airport and were very pleased. I don't remember the cost (and it's closer than Heathrow) but it was reasonable. The service we used was Chauffeur Travel, and the web site is https://chauffeurtravel.co.uk/
