Heathrow Security

I experienced the new Heathrow security today that will be mandatory at all major UK airports this June. Terminal 3. Fast Track.

Nothing has to be taken out of your bag. Coats off, boots off (shoes stay on), pockets empty, belt off. (They say you can keep watches and jewelry on since its visible.

You walk through the nude-o-scope rather than the typical walk through xray. Then, if you stll have your shoes on, you go to a machine that checks them one at a time. (You stand on a foot diagram on the machine.) Two green lights and you're good to go.

It was much faster than normal since people aren't pulling things out of their bag.

Thanks for that report!

Was the process not held up by slow luggage scanners? The newer generation in the states move at a glacial pace.

The scanners were fairly fast.

Much faster than when every item had to be physically scanned by a person.

That’s good to hear. Which terminal? Have they relaxed the liquids rule (100 ml or 3.4 oz) too?

I left from Terminal 3 two weeks ago, but didn’t experience the new way.
Does it depend on where you are flying to?

In fact, as everyone’s belongings were going through the scanner, someone’s backpack got stuck and held everything up for about 20 minutes.
In the end, a scanner-person climbed right inside the scanner while poking at the innards with a big litter-picker stick!

It's a trial of some (not all) scanners in terminals 2 and 5. It's definitely a lot easier and faster than the traditional process, and the machines seem to work at the same speed.

It was supposed to be entirely implemented by mid-2024, but there's a delay and they're now saying it will be mid-2025 before all scanners are replaced with the new generation. Apparently they're heavier and the floors can't support the weight.

The scanners I went through were at the Fast Track lanes at Terminal 3.

Security at Heathrow is not separated by destination.
