Heathrow New Security Officers Strikes

Security Officers at London Heathrow Terminals 3 and 5 will strike on 31 days over the summer-

24 and 25 June
28-30 June (The Eid Festival)
14-16 July
21-24 July (start of the English School Holidays)
28-31 July
4-7 August
11-14 August
18-20 August
and 24-27 August (Bank Holiday Weekend).

These are the first such strikes to affect Terminal 3 in the current dispute.

Quite surprising that the staff are willing and able to lose over a month's salary in two months.

The BBC picture is very poor journalism though, given it is a pandemic era queue. Nothing like this was seen in the recent strikes.

The previous strikes have all been for one type of security staff - those receiving goods on the ground into Heathrow - that is principally cargo, and some baggage. The full details of this wave are to be fully seen but nothing in this suggests it is for Central Search (people departing). Previous strikes saw no real effect on any part of the airport as any impact was mostly mitigated by cancellations.

The most likely outcome will be a repeat of cancellations, unfortunately.

We are arriving at Terminal 3 on June 28. Not clear after reading the BBC article whether this will affect arriving passengers as well as departing ones. Just want to know what to prepare for.

The other article posted by Lindy states that it will be customer facing officers.
But that article also suggests that what they call 'Campus Security Officers' (those checking everyone who goes airside) are also considering joining the action.
If that happens it is more likely to also affect arrivals if airside staff face issues getting to work.

In some ways the effects may only be understood after the first dates on 24 and 25 June- assuming the dispute has not been settled by then.

Hopefully it will only have the very limited effects which the earlier strike dates had, but forewarned, forearmed. The bigger issue may be if flights begin to be cancelled or delayed. That will be up to the airlines.

To Leslie - it will have no effect at all - there is no security to go through on arrival

Thanks. I knew that TSA and passport control are staffed by two different entities here in the US, but I didn't want to assume the same for other countries. We'll be watching this one since we leave on July 25--not a strike day, but I assume if there are cancelled flights in the 4 strike days before our departure it will make things "interesting" for the next few days.

With all the European strikes, flying through the mainstay airports like LHR and CDG and FRA, I am begining to think it just isnt worth the risk any longer. Turkish Air is looking better every day. A few hours longer but it appears more reliable. (even that depends on layover times as you can easily do 90 min in IST (and I have done 60 min), but I want no less than 3 hours at LHR).
