Heathrow , London

We will be arriving and departing at terminal 5. Will need to get to Avis rental cars
Looking at the maps it seems you take the lift to get up to Transportation.
I am claustrophobic and cannot use the lift.
Is there a stairway/ escalator that I can use
Thank you in advance

I haven’t been to Heathrow in a while but a quick look at the terminal 5 map on Heathrow.com shows escalators to level 2 and 3.

Terminal 5 is the newest and nicest terminal at LHR so you should be fine.

since the lift even has windows, could you maybe even try that? Whichever way you manage, I'm sure you'll be fine... welcome to England

As I recall, there is a stairway between levels right next to the elevators. The stairway is open and light.

Nigel, unfortunately even a lift with windows is something I cannot do. Totally illogical I know.
I wish I could do better. But thank you for your reply

If it helps any, the lifts can hold about 20-25 people and you will be in it for less than a minute.

If not there are alternatives to the lift.

If you don't mind me asking, how do you manage a long plane flight?

I don,t have an answer to being able to do the long flight. I only know that claustrophobia is very illogical
And very debilitating. Lifts, MRI,s and small rooms are impossible. Over the years I have tried very hard to beat it. It goes against who I am?

Thanks.....I have a friend who is also claustrophobic but wants to travel. He just can't fathom the idea of sitting in a plane for hours at a time. I thought you might have a secret or two.......

have you tried slowly exposing yourself for short periods of time? then gradually increasing time and decreasing size?

I cannot even step into a lift, let alone stand there for more than a second. Ha ha. I think I need help
Regarding the flight, wish I had some answers for your friend. The only problem I have is waiting in a line to get off, so I bury myself in a book , trembling until everyone has gone. I am 79yrs of age and need to get over it

Rather than picking it up at T5, pick it up at the Avis facility on Heathrow Airport T2-4 Central Heathrow Loc, Northrop Rd. It may take a little longer, but you could avoid the lift.

You’d need to take a shuttle. Unlike T5, that facility isn’t right at the terminal.
