Heathrow Airport to Central London

Hi,
I am a first time traveler to London. Would like help with transportation. Will be arriving in Heathrow Airport and need to get to the hotel in Central London (Bloomsbury area); close to St Pancreas/King's Cross. Also, I wanted to buy a railway 7-day travel card to use for the 2-for-1 deal. What is the best way to get this card and use it to travel to the hotel? I know I have to buy it from a national railway station.

Another option was to use uber (37 flat rate) to get to the hotel from the airport and just get the 7 day travel card from King's Cross (15 minute walk from the hotel).

Would appreciate useful input.

Thanks!

Most likely you are going to buy a zone 1-2 travelcard, so it won't cover either Heathrow Express (always a separate fare) or the many-zone direct Tube connection from Heathrow (which costs a little more before 9:30 AM.) You also have to decide whether to buy a special Oyster card that can hold a 7-day travelcard (the other kind of Oyster can't) and put a little cash on it for the Heathrow trip(s?), or deal specifically with the national rail product, which we didn't use. Be sure you actually want to see the sights that are on the 2 for 1 deal.

We used the Tube option for the first time this year, and except for the longer ride, it worked very well. We didn't even have to change lines, which can a very long walk with luggage. You won't have to change either if your destination is Kings Cross. But the ride could take 45-60 minutes. We got seats, but you need to handle your luggage so you don't cause trouble for the other riders.

My wife and I just returned from London and had a fantastic time. The Heathrow Express, while comparatively pricey, whisks you down to Paddington in a comfortable 15 minutes. For us, with time in London at a premium, the speed and convenience was worth the additional cost.

You cannot buy the 7 day travelcard with the National Rail logo at Heathrow. So, if you want to use the 2 for 1 deals with a 7 day travelcard, you can get to your hotel by any method you like, then buy the card at King's Cross or St. Pancras stations. (Note that there's no "e" in St. Pancras).

As for how to get to from LHR to your hotel, you can take the tube, but it will require a change. If you want to do this, ask here for which station is the easiest to change in, and if there are any tricks. For instance, at some stations it's easier to go up almost to the exit and then go back down; this actually involves less walking or no stairs, compared with following the transfer signs in the station.

You can book a car (I don't know about Uber, but Just Airports is often recommended); this is cheaper than using a black cab at the airport. This is obviously easiest, particularly if you're jetlagged, packing heavy, have any mobility impairment, etc.

If you take the Heathrow Express or Heathrow Connect (slightly slower but much cheaper than Heathrow Express), you then have to get from Paddington Station to your hotel; this adds cost and hassle, and I'm not sure it's worth it vs. the alternatives, particularly for more than one person (the cost of two train fares plus a cab equals or exceeds the Just Airports cost).

Not that I would particularly recommend it in this circumstance, but if bought in advance the Heathrow Express is £50 round trip for a party of 2.

As the actual hotel name or address has not been given, precise info is not possible. However, step free access from the platform is available at KC/St Pancras to get to street level.

Using the tube from Heathrow to King's Cross will not involve a change of trains (take the Piccadilly line), takes about an hour, and the cash fare is £5.70. I've done this a number of times and never had a problem even with luggage (of course after my first trip I've used an Oyster card to get the cheaper fare). This would be your most economical way. Then you can buy the railway 7 day travel card at King's Cross.

Mary's advice is that which I would have given myself, FWIW.
