I booked on two separate tickets from DFW to Heathrow, then from Heathrow to Pisa. I booked these on two separate bookings. If I travel with carry on luggage only, will I have to go through customs and immigration? Or can I stay airside when I transfer from Terminal 3 to 5 at Heathrow?
You can stay airside.....follow signs for "Flight Connection. You will not have to go through passport control or customs. You will, however, go though security.
Make sure to check in online and print your boarding pass for your second leg.
Laura, if I check in on the British Airways app and download the boarding pass on my phone, I presume that would be just as fine as a printed one. Correct?
I fly BA from DFW. I have printed my tickets and taken them to airport, and I have used the phone app. If you check luggage, the BA employee will print a new ticket. If you do not check luggage, then an announcement will be made, at your terminal, to present yourself at the BA desk. They will then print ticket. Either way, at least in my experience, you will be handed the typical card-stock ticket.
I would also make sure to either have a digital ticket or printed ticket for each of my flights.
Thanks Debra. So you think there would be enough time if I checked in my flight on the BA app, took only carry on, and transfer between Terminal 3-5? My flight lands at 6:55 a.m. and the Pisa one departs at 8:50 a.m. If I can stay airside and not have to worry about rechecking luggage because I'm only doing carry on, I think I will have time because I won't have to go through passport control.
Heathrow's website has a great connection guide. Put in all of your exact flight details, and it will tell you all the steps and the estimated time you will need. Key word, of course, is estimated: http://www.heathrow.com/flight-connections
The MCT on a single ticket for a terminal 3->5 transfer is 90 mins. You have about an extra half an hour buffer - but of course it is your risk. Note that BA as a matter of policy do generally attempt to accommodate people on two bookings in Oneworld who miss the second but there is no obligation to do so.
