Hi,
We have really appreciated all the great info we have gotten from everyone. Maybe you can help with this dilemma. After spending a few days in the Cotswolds we want to go to York and Liverpool and then the train to Edinburgh. We are trying to figure out which venue to take- Cotswolds to York then York to Liverpool then on to Scotland or Liverpool to York then on to Scotland. It looks like there may be a lot of time and train changes. We are starting to throw up our hands!! Any suggestions would be most appreciated!!

to Liverpool - Cheltenham Spa to Birmingham New Street (or Tamworth) to Liverpool Lime Street, or Moreton in Marsh to Worcestershire Parkway to Birmingham New Street and as before.
to York - Cheltenham Spa to York direct on Cross Country, or Moreton in Marsh to Worcestershire Parkway to York on Cross Country
Liverpool to York or v.v. - Liverpool Lime Street to York direct
Both Liverpool and York have services to Edinburgh, but from Liverpool Lime Street it is around the houses because Liverpool is at the end of the line; from York it is trivial - direct and frequent service on LNER.
Your confusion may be because you are zig zagging all over the place instead of going in a relatively straight line.
Not my expertise but it is Nigel’s. Just wondering why you would go to York from Cotswolds back to Liverpool then east again to Edinburgh? You might look at a map to see what your proposing to do. No wonder you’re throwing up your hands!
When planning a trip, try to go in one direction rather than back and forth. (A map does come in handy.) This should save you time and effort.
In this case, that would mean Cotswolds- Liverpool-York-Edinburgh. (No zig-zagging and continually moving north.)
The Cotswolds is a big place. What station/town are you trying to leave from?
I take it that you are flying into London but what is your departure airport? Are you returning south to London or flying out from Edinburgh? This can have a bearing on advice you are offered regarding land travel in Britain.
As has been said, you are zig-zagging about which is making things a bit more complicated. For the north Cotswolds, Moreton-in-Marsh in your best arrival station and this is NW of Oxford. You can proceed north from here by changing trains at Worcestershire Parkway or alternatively go by bus to Cheltenham where you can get trains heading north. You could also go back to Oxford from where direct trains go north to Birmingham and beyond - including York.
I suggested another way of doing things in your other post.
Click this link and you will see a map off the British Rail network. The thicker lines are the main routes and generally the fastest and carry the main ‘flows’ between the major population centres. Where lines intersect, you may be told to change trains to an intersecting route. This is quite simple and people do this all the time and if not sure - just ask as staff are usually present as well as other passengers.
On some journeys, it is sometimes cheaper to split the ticket - often at places where you change trains. Outline your final choice/dates and you may well get advice on ’splits’.
