Going to London in August, full disclosure, my "kids" are 17 and 19! But they want to go to the Harry Potter thing. We have limited time so I went to book the tour and the earliest time is 5pm. I was kind of hoping to go early then come back to do some other tourist things as we only have 2 full days in London. How long would you give factoring in a tour plus commute there and back?
The studios recommend being at Euston 90 minutes prior to the start time of your tour. I've been a couple of times and spent 3-4 hours each time.
Entry is timed, but they were allowing people to enter with earlier groups.
Definitely go! It really is a great experience. We took our ‘children’ ( late 20’s) and they loved it. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get to the studio, the website does a really good job of explaining how to get there. The studio stays open late so having a 5pm time will still give you plenty of time to enjoy everything.
I have been twice to the Studios and each time have had an early evening time slot. It is well worth it. On both occasions were were early to the studio and got to go in about 30-45 minutes earlier than our time.

We had a 1 o'clock entry. We left our apartment at 11 and were back at the apartment at 7 pm. We spent 5 hours at the studios with a little snack break. It was one of the highlights of our trip. That being said, if Harry Potter is/was not a huge thing for your kids, I would skip it especially if you only have 2 days in London
I waited too long and the days we could go were booked up through the studio site, so I booked through Golden Tours. It includes a coach trip to the studios and was more expensive but, in our case, we felt it's worth it. You might see if there are resellers with earlier times available.
If your kids want to go, then go! We are a pair of seniors, and we spent over 5 hours there. There is a cafeteria at about the half at point where you could get dinner. We thought it was well worth both the cost and the time spent.
