Handicaps and costs of entrance tickets to attractions

Hello all,

In 2015 we went to France and had no idea that because my husband is handicapped that his entrance fees to a lot of places were covered and sometimes mine as well. It was a pleasant surprise as we were going to buy a museum pass and did not have to for him.

We were wondering what it was like in England Wales and Scotland?

I find the information on websites is not always available. Has anyone any personal experience with this? Also, for my mom is there any senior discounts at places like Westminster, different castles etc?

If there are no discounts we will still visit of course but just trying to figure it all out.

You just have to ask. I think the policy is all over the place. The only place we found that we could consistently get a senior discount was in Spain. Everywhere else you had to be an EU citizen.

The concessions for seniors these days seem to in general be a pound or two - along way from years ago when half price was common. They in general are available to anyone of the requisite age.

There are some national schemes relating to disability - for example Cadw in Wales, Historic Scotland and English Heritage gives free admission to carers as does the National Trust.

Many attractions will have these but they don't always advertise them clearly.

We bought our museum pass for Paris since I didn't want to worry about the qualifications for the proof of disability, and whether we would qualify or not. But, likely we would have since we were ushered up to the front of most museums lines and not even asked for a pass or payment. The French were wonderful.

While in London I believe I asked for a discount at the Tower of London and got it, but don't recall any other discounts at other places, and no getting ushered up to the front like in France. It was more like here in the US. Don't know about Wales or Scotland.

My daughter thought she had become royalty while in France! It was such a wonderful experience for someone with a disability!
