Hammersmith or Hampstead Heath?

Traveling to London in June and am looking at accommodations in Hammersmith & Hampstead Heath. My questions:

1) are they manageable tube journeys to the city's sites - Westminster, Imperial War Museum, and so on?

2) any reasons to choose one over the other?

3) character of respective neighborhoods?

Thank you

Hampstead Heath is a huge hilly area, some park and some wilderness. It isn't a neighborhood of homes - in fact nobody (that I know of) lives on the Heath. It is surrounded by actual neighborhoods such as Belsize Park, Hampstead, Gospel Oak, Highgate, Golders Green, and Childs Hill - all of which have quite different feels and ambiance, as well as amenities.

Can you get a better fix on where?

There is a Hampstead Heath Overground (commuter) rail station but that is not especially near Hampstead.
