Hadrian's Wall Tours from Carlisle

We are arriving in Carlisle on a Saturday in July and leaving the following Monday, so basically spending one and a half days there just to see Hadrian's Wall, as we travel by train from Edinburgh to Liverpool. I'm having trouble finding any kind of tour online. I know we can take a bus there, but I'd kind of like to have a guide to explain what's what and maybe drive to different spots along the wall. Sunday would be our best day, but it seems no one has tours on a Sunday. Any suggestions?

I have a great suggestion for you, Peter Carney. This retired history teacher will match the tour to your interests and is so helpful. He will pick you up and drive you around. He really made this area and it’s history come alive for us.

Whatever you do, I recommend allowing time to do some walking along the wall. I found it a very awe-inspiring experience. You'll want to dress for the weather as the wall is very exposed. Even in July, it could be chilly with the wind, and there could be rain showers.

Thank you so much for your replies. I've emailed Peter Carney to see if he can accommodate us, as he doesn't normally do tours on Sunday, our only full day there. We will be there half a day on Saturday, so that may work also. I've seen him recommended on many travel websites and blogs, but disregarded him as he has Sundays blocked out. Thanks for your help!

If you could stay at Hexham at one of the several BnBs, you are closer to most of the major sites on the Wall. They also have a bus service that will go out to a starting point for a walk back. Haltwhistle, which is the center of the wall could be good, also. We stayed at a farmhouse BnB nearer Carlisle but we had a car so that we could stop wherever on our way east. I bet most of the tours start on the east end.

My wife and I just completed a day with Peter Carney. It was wonderful for me as a history buff. It was also extremely exciting and engaging for my wife, someone for whom history was ruined in the educational process. Peter is a master teacher and guide. He is both tremendously knowledgeable and able to engage you in discussion about the many puzzles that make up Hadrian's Wall.

Peter Carney is a remarkable guide, so I would hire him for the half-day on Saturday. He can give you an overview, and then on Sunday you can go back and explore sights in depth. On Sunday you'll need to take the train to Haltwhistle and then either the AD122 bus or hire a taxi to get to the wall. If the weather is good and you like to hike, a walk from Steel Rigg to Househeads is unforgettable. Also, of the three excellent museums along the wall, the best in my opinion is Vindolanda. This is the best Roman sight in Britain--you won't be disappointed.
