Grassington

I think I'll head to Grasssington for the day (from Skipton, by bus)...explore the village where All Creatures Great & Small is filmed, have lunch, etc...

Any recommendations?

In doing my research, I read about Craven Arms in Appletreewick...but I'd have to take a taxi there, I believe?

Thanks!

You can get to Appletreewick on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday on the #74a Ilkley to Grassington bus. You'll find the times on the Dalesbus website.
Bus 64 from Skipton goes to Ilkley (or the train, changing at Shipley)

Thanks, Stuart!

I think I’ll save that for next time - I was recommended the Fountaine Inn for lunch, and that’s on the same bus line as Skipton/Grasssington…

Linton in Craven is a lovely village. Hopefully you'll be able to get into the chapel at the Almshouses in the Village centre.
The village church is well worth going down to (always open) then using the stepping stones over the river at the bottom of the Churchyard, walk back to Linton falls then back into Grassington. If the river is too high for the stepping stones (as it was last time I was there to scatter some of Mum's ashes) cross by the bridge at the Mill/falls.

Oh, I hope so, Ian - that sounds lovely!

It’s an easy, shortish walk back to Grassington?

Thank you!!

You don’t need to catch a bus to Linton and the Fountaine’s Inn. It’s about a mile from Grassington and is an easy walk.

From the corner of the car park in Grassington, a paved track (Sedbur Lane on the map) between stone walls drops down to the River Wharfe.

This is limestone country and the river has cut down through the exposed limestone leaving weird shaped rocks. The two small weirs once fed a large, now demolished textile mill. Above the top weir is a small hydro-electric plant. This was shut in the 1940s but has recently been restored to generate electricity again.

Cross the footbridge and climb up to the road, and go straight ahead (ignore the turn to the right). At the cross roads go straight over to the village (ignore the road coming in on your left*). Continue straight on for the Inn and the Fountaine Hospital almshouses and Chapel mentioned by isn31c.

The [Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels][5] is set away from the village , along the river. You can either return to the footbridge over the river and continue to the end of the road to find the church. OR take the road * you ignored earlier. At the T junction, turn right and almost immediately afterwards take the footpath down to the river, Turn right for the church.

Either return the same way, or else continue past the church for the stepping stones across the river and pick up the footpath back along teh otherside oif the river which brings you back to Grassington.

Oh, I hope so, Ian - that sounds lovely!

Can’t take credit, it was Stuart’s suggestion. But I heartily endorse it! Yes, it's a straightforward if slightly uphill walk back to Grassington.

Betsy - I hope you enjoy Grassington! I was there last month on a Mountain Goat tour out of York. Quick stop, maybe an hour but I loved every minute.

I wanted to mention this little museum: https://grassingtonfolkmuseum.org.uk

it's on the main street. Quite small, I just wandered in. Locals have donated various items through the years. I like this kind of thing, I know some don't, but if you do like homey artifacts with a bit of local flavor, the stop is worthwhile. I'm sure I didn't have much longer than 20 minutes, but worth the stop to me. The volunteer was lovely - the kind of person easy to talk with about the local area.

Wasley, I ended up going to Fountaine Inn first, and decided to walk to Grassington from there. The waitress directed me to where I think would have led to the falls, but I saw a sign for Grassington and went that way

I …would not do that again. Mostly it was flat, but there were some slightly uphill parts, and me not being in the best shape…I was pretty exhausted by the time I reached Grassington. It didn’t help that I didn’t have a bottle of water with me, lol

But it WAS a lovely walk - although definitely more than a mile

Stuart and Ian, it was a great suggestion!

However, it wasn’t so easy for me, lol. Now I know what I can and can’t do easily, it’s going to put a new perspective on my stay in the Lake District

Thanks!

ORD, I loved it - it’s as big as a minute, lol

I collapsed at Love Brownies and gulped down huge amounts of ice water (and bought brownies for later). I took some photos of recognizable buildings from All Creatures Great & Small (films there), and wandered around. I DID go into the museum - if I had more time, I’d have spent more time; it was lovely

I made it into the National Park ! It’s where I’m waiting for my bus …oh my goodness, the views are staggering!

How did you like the tour? I would love to do that - though I’ll have to wait until I’m closer to York to do it. Where else did you stop?

Thanks!

Betsy, I did both the Yorkshire Dales/All Creatures and the North York Moors and Whitby tour with Mountain Goat. Really enjoyed them both. Small van, we were off on single lane roads that I wouldn't have enjoyed driving myself. Non-stop commentary, very relevant and enjoyable. Some historical perspective (review for several of us - but not pedantic, I appreciated it), local color, stories, etc. Stops were adequate time and well-timed to prevent feeling like it was a long-day-in-a-bus sort of experience.

Highly recommend the company. I didn't have time for all bus connections that you are managing and didn't want to rent a car. Mountain Goat gave me a great over view of the area. I have another booked in the Lake District next month!

Just adding - I’m stuck in YD National Park with 2 other people because the 17:28 bus didn’t run, and it doesn’t look like they’re going to run the 18:30 bus. It looks like we’re all going to share a taxi, lol. This guy has been speaking to the bus company - all they told him is that we should arrange taxis, lol. He’s annoyed, and he’s actually going to take it up with the company because he’s right - they’re essentially leaving people stranded. The bus company should have a back up plan for times when buses break down - they should have a taxi company that they use.

It’s frustrating

ORD, those are both tours I’m interested in! Sounds perfect - I love small group tours!

I’ve actually booked a Lake District your with them on May 27th! Even though I’m going to LD, I will still keep it because I’ll be able to see more than I could on my own

Oh dear! Best of luck on the taxi situation.

I was impressed by the taxi companies I used from Durham and surrounding area. I hope it’s the same situation in Yorkshire where you are!

ORD, it worked out - we all split a taxi to Skipton! The driver was terrific. This will just be a fun adventure story, lol

I saw that bus that broke down, right by the bus station in Skipton - it must have been there for at least 2 hours!

Tracking the bus it left the Bus Station on time at 1655, then broke down at the railway station at 1700, then was taken back to the bus station getting back there at 1701. As of 2015 it has not yet been recovered to Keighley shed.

Truly nothing is secret these days.

Stuart, I saw the bus, lol

The guy I referred to above was also tracking it as a red blob - it was there, then it disappeared, then it reappeared, lol
