Grand York Hotel, in York

Has anyone stayed here recently or know of someone who did?

It appears to be lovely. I'm just looking for feedback from the group (always appreciated) as validation.

Thank you

Hi Steve - is this the hotel that used to be railway offices? If it is, the railway’s crest is still on the outside wall. I haven’t stayed there myself - too close to home - but have heard it is rather upmarket, and definitely lovely. Unfortunately, it appears to have lovely prices as well……

Yes!!! I stayed here May of 2023. One of my favorite hotels ever!! The staff could not be nicer. And it’s such a great location.

This is what I had to say about it in my trip report:

I stayed at the Grand York, which was a little fancier than I needed,
but it was a great location, in between the train station and city
center, and right across the street from an entrance to the city
walls. This hotel was fabulous and well worth the price!! I find that
by booking hotels early (10-11 months in advance) prices are at their
lowest. I had originally planned to stay 5 nights, but I added an
extra night due to the train strikes.

Do not hesitate to book here.

Thank you ianandjulie and Carrie -- much appreciated!

ianandjulie I do not know if this had formerly been the railway offices.

Carrie, thank you also for sharing your trip report! What a coincidence, as we are also seeing Edinburgh, and have chosen the Market Street Hotel based on other Forum posters; I'm so glad to see another endorsement. We will start in Edinburgh for 2+ days, take the train to York and spend 2 days there, and then end with 5 days in Oxford (train from York to Oxford) with plans to see the Cotswolds and probably Bath. I have found trains from Edinburgh to York and York to Oxford with no change required. And from Oxford it is just over a half hour to Moreton-in-Marsh for entry into the Cotswolds.
Enjoy your Benelux trip!

Yes it was the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway, the predecessor operator of the East Coast main line.

I stayed there a couple of years ago. It is a wonderful hotel. A little on the expensive side, but it is nice. It is very near the railway station and a short walk to York Minister. If I would return to York, I might look at some accommodation with a York Minister view, but would still not hesitate to re-book the Grand.

Thank you isn31c and mpaulynsettle

And thank you mpaulynsettle for confirming that the Grand York would be a good choice.

We stayed at the Grand York in 2022. We selected the new wing. Everything about the stay and the property was outstanding. Truly a world class property!
