Google Maps in the UK

I'll be in the UK this summer ( London and Cotswolds) and I'm wondering what kind of experience people have had using an iphone and Google Maps? Of course I will check with my provider to be sure I have the necessary coverage in the area.

Haven't used Google Maps in the UK but have used it all over Europe. Should work fine in the UK, too. If you are driving, you can use Google Maps "offline" by downloading the maps for that area ahead of time (on WiFi) - no need for mobile data. Google Maps "offline" doesn't work for walking or public transit directions however - you need mobile data for that.

I used Google maps ALL the time in 2011 when I lived/worked there for 2 months because it gave great detail on exactly which bus routes connected to everywhere. That directions feature, and selecting the bus icon, it's a great thing.

iPhone stores are all over London, I don't have one, but I know a lot of others over there who do.

I found many of the mobile phone stores (if you need any kind of card or accessory) were not open on Sundays and not found on the South Bank side of the Thames much. Windsor had resources, that's where we finally found one.

The Rick Steves guide book gives info on the most popular wifi network, I think by Sky (TV/internet) and hotspots are all over, for free. I had a lot of trouble getting the connection to be secure enough for Facebook to let me on, so that was a struggle. If you can work off of data without going broke, that would be helpful. I've also found that setting up a blog page works well too, I did it for aunts and uncles who weren't on FB, but I found it was a good way to back-up my photos. It left more space on my phone for more pics, and gave me a backup so I didn't have to worry about anything getting deleted.

Have fun!

I used Google maps on an iPhone when I was driving around the Southampton area in 2016 and never used data. I downloaded the map beforehand and updated by wifi in hotels when needed (it will ask for an update every 30 days).

Google maps isn't great but better than nothing for sure. Use Citymapper in London, it's excellent.

We used Google Maps all the time while in Europe, and didn't use data at all. Downloaded the necessary maps using free WiFi in our hotel, then used it offline while out and about. But ours is Android and has GPS. Not sure if iPhones have that.

Yes, iPhones work offline for Google Maps just like Android smartphones. I've done it in the UK with few problems. Always bring a phone charger that works in your car because these map apps use a lot of power even if they are off line. Also, a removable phone mount for your iPhone is a smart buy.

I used google maps quite extensively these past few days while in London, St Albans and Winchester.
