Hi. We are looking for good and healthy restaurants that are not too spendy near County Hall/South Bank. Any recommendations?
There's a whole selection of decent mid-price chain restaurants around the Royal Festival Hall area of the South Bank, not far from County Hall - including Wagamama, Strada, Giraffe, PingPong, Canteen and a branch of EAT.
There's even a Nando's if you fancy a cheeky one, on a street called Upper Ground, which runs behind the South Bank Centre. This also has a whole bunch of other restaurants. You can also look out for Marie's Cafe, which I think is on The Cut, just behind Waterloo Station - a traditional cafe by day, a Thai restaurant by night.
Further along, there's a good pizza place at Gabriel's Wharf.
Also there's often a street food market just behind the Royal Festival Hall. Each of the theatres and galleries along the South Bank have a range of eating places as well. And Waterloo station is very close which has a lot of options too, if you want to grab food at M&S Simply Food or find a coffee.
All of these will have healthy options and aren't too expensive.
and of course if you want to have a stroll along the river you're not a million miles from Borough Market.
We also really enjoyed Pizza Express which has a location close by.
Marie's Cafe, which Jane mentions, is actually in Lower Marsh Street just up from the Cut. I second her recommendation if you want to try something a bit unusual.
In the Cut itself I like Tas. A good middle eastern restaurant. Just opposite is the Anchor and Hope, a well rated gastro pub. I think it's OK but a friend who is a chef raves about it.
You won't starve!
Alan
Also on The Cut is Meson Don Felipe, the best tapas bar in central London
