Good place to shop for wool and wax flat hats in London, Glasgow, Edinburgh

We will be in the UK soon visiting London, and several locations in Scotland to include Glasgow and Edinburgh. Does anyone know a good place to shop for good quality wool or wax flat hats that won’t break the bank? I’ve seen them go for upwards of $150 USD and I definitely don’t want to spend that much, but I would like to buy a couple to bring back as presents for members of my family. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

There’s a hat vendor at Spitalfields market in London. Have purchased a couple of hats/caps there over the years. Good quality. Can’t recall prices.

In Edinburgh, I noticed the Edinburgh Woollen Mill (https://www.ewm.co.uk/) on the Royal Mile. Normally, I would be a bit suspicious of the prices at such a place because that's the most visible street in the Scottish capital. However, it didn't seem over-touristy to me: They had an excellent display on spinning. I didn't buy anything because I visited Ireland during the same trip, where a lot of wool gifts are available. Given that Scotland must be the wool capital of the world, there are probably other shops in Edinburgh if you want to keep your options open.

Cat VH mentions Laird’s. There’s a location by Covent Garden and it is excellent. They have a WIDE selection. Caps start at about $100 though… sigh. I’d forgotten they were that pricey. The quality is amazing, though!

Lairds is on my list. I found their online store and it looks great. Honestly, $100 USD isn’t horrible although you have to pay the VAT and depending on how much you buy during the trip it may or may not make sense to make a pit stop at the airport to get reimbursed.

I would love to find a small Mom and Pop store that sells nice flat and newsboy caps. Big fancy stores are nice, but sometimes the smaller places that have been around forever have excellent craftsmanship and a better story. In the end it’s also about the experience.

As a few others mentioned, Lairds in Covent Garden has a wide variety of quality merchandise; and while a little pricey, their hats are well worth it.

Don’t forget that everything is priced including VAT, so £100 includes VAT.

Edinburgh Woollen Mill is a chain store beloved of older people for their jumpers (sweaters) but it mainly sells what I’d call “tourist tat”. Not really the place for a quality flat cap although theirs start at about £35. However, they are highly unlikely to have been made in Scotland for that price, even though they may be made using Harris Tweed. You might try Fabhatrix in Edinburgh which is an independent milliners.

Barbour stores sell high quality goods, and I see their waxed cotton flat caps for 35 GBP. You might also check out Rohan and Bruar stores.

35 quid for a waxed Barbour cap seems pretty good value to me. I'd have thought they would be more expensive.

Barbour! Yes! Their store on Duke Street is great. Staff there are super helpful and friendly. And yes, wax caps do start at a great price point!

Ramblin,

Lock Hatters is pretty high end. A wax cap will set you back about $200 there. As for the VAT, I see that he UK discontinued the airport refunds in 2021. Too bad. I just obtained a nice refund at the airport in Naples and it went seamlessly. Oh, well.
