Golden Tours overnight to Edinburgh from London

Hello fellow travelers,

Has anyone done the Golden Tours overnight to Edinburgh from London? http://www.goldentours.com/edinburgh-overnight

I want to try it since they seem to take care of train ticket, a bus tour in Edinburgh and accommodations as well. They claim the accommodation is in a 3 star hotel.

Let me know if any of you have tried this and have been successful. The alternative would be for me to arrange all of these myself.

I see that International Friends does a tour as well, but those dates are not right for me.

Thank you

Never done the Golden Tours thing, sorry.
But if you need tips on Edinburgh, e.g. where to stay and where to eat, I'll be happy to share the m with you.

It’s easy to get back and forth from London to Edinburgh via the train. Go to http://www.britishrail.com/ and book your tickets. In London, the departure/arrival station for Edinburgh trains is Kings Cross and the trains arrive/depart Waverley in Edinburgh. Generally speaking, these trains are straight through and take about 4 ½ hours. If you buy 1st Class, you get free WIFI and refreshments.

The Edinburgh Hop On/Hop Off terminal and ticket office is directly across from the Waverley station in Edinburgh and tickets, including combo tickets, are available on-line. There is a luggage check in the Edinburgh Waverley station to store your bag when you get there.

The last detail is lodging… There are so many options but my favorite is the Kew House B&B in the Haymarket area. 20 minutes with google and you should be able to find a place that fits your needs and budget.

In my opinion, this trip is too easy to enlist the services of a tour company. Just go for it and have fun.

I was thinking the same as Todd, that a quick trip to Edinburgh is really quite easy. I tried to see if there were reviews of the trip, but couldn't find any. I think I would recommend doing it on your own, unless you're really pressed for time and are willing to pay for someone else to plan it. Try to find out what hotels they typically stay in. They should be able to tell you some examples. Then you can compare that to what you can get on your own. What was described on their website didn't really look that complex.

Edinburgh is not very big. You can stay within walking distance of the train station. It's easy to get around the city--either do a hop on hop off bus tour, or get a day pass for public transit. There are tons of restaurants at various price ranges Just make sure you leave time to explore the Castle. That will orient you to the city. We can give you suggestions for the rest of your time.

It sounds like they are packaging items that are easy enough to book yourself, such as a Grey Line bus tour, and which probably all offer some online discounts. For advance discounts on train tickets, we would use www.nationalrail.co.uk. See also our British rail page.

I think you could plan the trip yourself without too much difficulty. In 2011 , we were in Edinburgh for a few days and took the train back to London. You can go online British rail and get train tickets pretty reasonable. You arrive at Waverly, which is very close to High Street, the Main Street in Edinburgh . We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on Cowgate, it's the other side of High St. From Waverly station. You can walk up High Street to the Castle, and down to Holyrood . Hop on hop off bus across street from Waverly station. I love Edinburgh. I've taken a few guided tours over the years to me always better when you can do it on your own. Enjoy.

I think that golden tours just gets everything organized for you - so they get the tickets, the accommodation, tickets to hop off and on tours, and entrance to Edinburgh castle. The alternative is for me to organize each part myself. I've already checked out the accommodation places and they do seem rather central and good.

I will let you all know if I decide to do this next week. :-)
