Going soon to the UK? Apply for your ETA by tomorrow!

I used the UK ETA app yesterday to apply for my ETA (the now-required Electronic Travel Authorisation - not Estimated Time of Arrival), and got the ETA approval e-mail a few hours later. We’re flying to Heathrow later this month, and it’s good for two years. The application price is going up from £10 to £16 in two days, on April 9, so save yourself a few bucks and do it today or tomorrow. It’s not a King’s Ransom if you wait, but if you’re heading to the UK soon, and if every little bit of savings helps, don’t wait.

Carol now retired started a thread back in November, sharing her experience applying for her ETA https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/england/uk-eta-application-experience . She mentioned, and I want to stress, when you get to the part in the app procedure where the instructions want you to use your smartphone to scan the chip embedded in the back cover of your passport, don’t waste your time. Hit “Skip” at the bottom of your screen instead, rather than trying unsuccessfully to scan the chip, and it will then just take a couple of seconds to verify your passport number, name, and birthday, and you’re ready for the next step. No scanning needed.

Also, even the £10 quoted price in the next two days will cost you over $13 US, if you’re paying from the U.S.A. Although the current exchange rate puts £10 at less than $13, the ETA app charges a flat fee that’s more than the exchange rate; in effect, it’s another DCC cost, unavoidable. But if you want into the UK, you now will need the ETA, so get it before the price goes up.

Well I took the case off my phone and it scanned the chip fine. But might be easier to just type in the info if that’s the alternative.

I didn't have any issues scanning the chip.

Rocket, I didn’t have to type in the info after hitting “Skip.” It had already been captured when I took a shot of the Page 1 “photo page” of my passport at the beginning of the application process, and the app was just double-checking that the Passport#, name, and birthdate were correct. My phone cover takes some fumbling to remove and reinstall, so the Skip function was much easier than the Scan attempts were, for me.

KB, I wonder if Canadian passports have better chips? :)

I didn't have any issues scanning the chip in mine either -- just remember that in U.S. passports, the chip is in the BACK cover.

Thanks for reminding people about the increase in cost coming soon.

Cyn,

I'm not sure. I would have thought the chips the same.

I just applied for the ETA for myself and my husband using the app. We both have US passports. I want to report that the process was amazingly quick and the instructions were very clear. We got both done within 10 minutes. I chose to have our passports scanned. The app gave very clear instructions to hold the phone close - touching- the inside back cover and hold it steady till it was done scanning and it hardly took a few seconds each. Since I had Google Wallet activated on my phone, it asked if I want to pay using that and told me it was USD 13.45 (each) today (Apr 7, 2025) including currency conversion fees (no option of choosing GBP or anything else). So now we wait for the decision, but otherwise all is done.
P.S. I did not take the phone out of it's case. The passports do not have covers.

I think that it is time for me to get serious about the UK ETA. I have not been giving it a lot of thought.

Can I apply for the ETA on my computer. I like Apple and my phone is Android.

But once it is approved, then what?? Do I show something going through immigration or does something just automatically come up?

Bostonphil, yes you can use the website to apply. Just make sure it is the official website. I heard that there is currently a queue to use the website (about 10 mins wait) and then you get 20 minutes I think the complete your application.

Once you get the email saying your ETA has been approved, that should be that, but I did hear some reports that airlines are asking to see the email confirmation. I plan to keep a paper copy of my ETA confirmation with me just in case...I have traveled enough to know that anyone can ask for anything at any time.....

I used the website. When I first tried (using the link posted by a forum member), it said 39 min. I checked back twice within 3 hours and the second time it was 2 min.

bostonphil, adding to what MapLady shared:

  1. Go to your Google Play Store for your Android. I went to the App Store for my Apple iPhone. Several options came up, including what seems to be a third party company promising to get it done faster, or cheaper, or something??? Another looked like what a British citizen would use, not overseas visitors. Go with the UK ETA app.

  2. I had wait to open the App and start the application yesterday (a Sunday afternoon). I wonder if you did it tonight, 8:00PM Central Daylight Time, in the middle of the night in the UK, maybe there wouldn’t be much delay?

  3. When you start the process, it alerts you that you have 30 minutes to finish the application, or it will time out and you have to start over. If you Skip scanning the chip inside the back cover, and don’t read through every Privacy Notice explanation, you’ll be done in much, much less time than that.

  4. After entering your info and photo images, and paying your approx. $13.45 application fee, you should get an approval e-mail within a few hours. That lets you know that your ETA is valid for the next two years. When you arrive in the UK and present your passport, their border security system will automatically know that a valid ETA exists for that passport, and you will be good to go.

bostonphil as you are getting a new passport (per your other thread discussing travel plans and passport renewal) you should not apply for an ETA today, as it is linked to the passport you use to apply. As you do not have your new passport, that would be a waste of time and money. Once you get your new passport then apply. The ETA is good for two years or until your passport expires, which ever comes first.

Good catch, CL. So, bostonphil, if your new passport hasn’t arrived by tomorrow afternoon, the price for the ETA will be more like $20 to $22 when you apply, based on current exchange rate with the British Pound Sterling.

I couldn't scan my own passport, which is 9 years old and well-used, but had no problem scanning the chips in my grandchildren's brand-new passports.

So I'm wondering if the amount of usage has anything to do with scanning the chip, or just the age itself. There are probably better chips available today.

Thank you CL and Cyn

I would be really shocked if I got my passport in the next few days so if I did need to apply for ETA, I will be paying a higher rate. Still reasonable cost.

B A is the only airline that offers non stop service between Austin and London or Europe on a regular service.

Just in case I choose to go to Europe rather than Asia for the next cruise, thought I would get the information now.

if you don't have actual plans to travel through the UK and don't have your new passport until after the price rise you may be better holding off until you need to have it. It is good for 2 years and getting it before you need it may be money down the drain especially if you might travel to the UK twice.

Note that if you are flying to London Heathrow from Austin and continuing on a connecting flight all on one ticket and stay airside you don't need an ETA.

The app could not find my chip, either. Our passports are older. The process was fairly easy.

FYI The official app is not compatible with certain versions (older) android phones.

It took almost two hours to get through the online queue to fill in the application today.

We did it on our phones and it took 3-4 hours for it to be approved.
