Looking to fly in/out of London, traveling in November or December, unless I find a really great flight in/out of Frankfurt Germany. Visiting family stationed in Germany-who will be coming to meet me in London or picking me up at an airport in Germany. We'll then be traveling together. Looking for any tips and packing advice for traveling in London and Germany during the colder weather. Thank you!
The one piece of advice I will give you is to book your Harry Potter tickets VERY early. We books ours 4 months ahead of our date and the morning times were already sold out
Look at flying open jaw - in to London and out of Frankfurt or the opposite. Don't price one-way tickets, select the multi-city option on the website for your airline of choice.
I would want a waterproof outer layer that you an layer over a polarfleece or puffy jacket for warmth. You'll want a warm hat and gloves. For the last few years I have been using Smartwool glove liners which I love. You might want a thicker weight, though. You can pick up a neat winter scarf on vacation.
You might want to look at base layers - formerly known as long underwear, lol. The new ones are thin and you can easily layer them under your regular clothes.
Consider wool socks. Smartwool is a good brand but if you have a Costco near you, for the last few years they have had very inexpensive merino wool socks in the Fall. Your shoes will need to be roomy enough to accommodate the thicker socks.
Plan to spend 5 nights in London to start with.
How long total will you have?
Into London and out of somewhere else in Europe with an open jaw/multicity ticket for the transatlantic stuff will often save $100 or so because the UK departure taxes for short haul are a lot less than what you pay to leave the UK for a transatlantic flight.
Generally cheapest to fill the open jaw part of the trip with a different one way ticket London-Germany since the short haul market out of London is extremely price competitive.
London in November or early December won't necessarily be terribly cold but there's a good chance it could be wet.
The shorter daylight hours (about 8 hours in london) are also a thing to consider.
Everyone THANK YOU for all the great advice, I really need it. Thanks again and I'm going to put this advice to great use!!
As soon as you can commit to London dates I suggest you consider reserving your spot at the Harry Potter studios - it is still very popular and dates fill quickly.
