Going back to London, hotel suggestion needed!

We are heading back to London for a week in January. We were there just this past January and fell in love with the city. We are going this time of year as our adult son has a free week off. Actually, we didn’t mind it so much, as we never had to wait at a restaurant or pub at most places! (And it’s so cozy in winter in a pub).

Anyway, since we are paying for 2 rooms, we are aware of the price more than if it was just 1 room. Last time we stayed at Montague on the Garden, which was just fantastic. I’m not saying we won’t stay again, but I also know you can’t replicate the feeling of a “first time” visit. Now that we better know the lay of the land, it was about a mile walk from Covent Garden, more from Soho. We’re fit so that’s not a problem, but in the cold…well it’s cold.

So, I’m sort of looking at hotels closer to Covent Garden, Soho, around that area that’s more outside the door, so to speak. I’m looking for about 250 pounds a night fir 2 people, under for his twin room.

Yes, I’ll be looking on my own. I’m hoping someone can give me recommendations on a place they stayed and loved in that area, with reasonable rates.

Thanks so much!

We visited London last month and stayed at a Premier Inn. There are many Premier Inn hotels all over London. They are affordable, clean and breakfast is extra, but a a very reasonable cost.
Premier Inn will fit in your budget.

Lulu would you consider a flat? I have found that when traveling with family members, a two bedroom flat is especially nice. I have a favorite in Pimlico. I usually go through VRBO. If I stay in a hotel in London, it is usually a Premier Inn. Waterloo and County Hall are my favorites.

£250 a night for that location is pretty low. I’ve stayed at the Clermont Charing Cross before and that’s a nice hotel in a fantastic location. It’s probably somewhere close to your budget. They have various deals available for booking direct.

OK, here is my idea. You two get a room at Montague on the Gardens. Great place. Dear son, get him a bed at Astor Museum Hostel just a few doors down the street. I stayed there on my first independent trip to London in 1983 and had a great time, it was maybe 5 pounds a night, much more now I expect, but it looks like it’s still there.

As a solo traveler, I must warn you that a twin room booked for one person may not be much less expensive than a room for two. You may only save the cost of breakfast for the non-existent fourth person. It may be different if you choose a hotel with some rooms specifically designated for singles; those are often very cramped and thus cheaper.

I would encourage you to spread your search a bit. There are many. many other interesting places to stay than in very busy Covent Garden or Soho. I would look further east to the area around Liverpool St and Spitalfields or on the South Bank around Blackfriars or London Bridge. You will get better value yet still be handy for tourist attractions and never short of base and restaurants.

I agree with @geovagriffith post regarding a Premier Inn. I just finished a 4-day stay at Premier Inn's hub at Paddington Station. I realize this is not where you want to be, but you may find a Premier Inn and hub combo where you want to go. I found the Paddington Inn location to be great for my train, tube, and bus trips as it is adjcent to the western entrance to both train and tube and the bus lines I needed were on my street just steps from the hotel.

I mention the Premier Inn and hub combo becasue the hub might be great for your son. The hub rooms are basically a full size bed, a chair and a bathroom. What I call a "sleep and shower" room. The two hotels had individual enterances connected by Premier Inn's bar and restaurant, accessable from either lobby.

I can't vouch for it myself, but I had a friend stay a couple of weeks ago at the Strand Palace not far from Covent Garden, and they were quite happy with it. I have no idea what it costs per night.
