Hi All! We will be traveling with a child this summer who has celiacs disease. He loves fish and chips but it can be hard to find in the gluten free variety! We will be staying near the London Eye. Any recommendations? Thank you!
I have celiacs as well. I have travelled in Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Austria without many problems. I use preprinted laminated cards that described the conditions and the food limitations in the local language. Italy tests kids and it is easy to find appropriate dishes in restaurants. Unfortunately, I have no experience with England. I would look up their national foundation or for a celiacs forum in London. They may be able to help. Also they may call it something else. Good LUck.
Hobson's advertises that they have gluten free fish & chips, but I don't think that's near the London Eye.
You may struggle. The majority of chip shops will not have a dedicated fryer solely for gluten free frying.
You get better fish and chips from a chip shop than from a pub or restaurant. I have been in lots and lots of chip shops throughout my life in the UK and I have never seen anywhere saying they offer gluten free.
I am sure that you could find somewhere via Google, but ring to check before you make a long journey. It’s likely to be a specialist gluten free place rather than a chip shop.
A chip shop near me does gluten free but only on Mondays and Tuesdays. I daresay everyone who needs that knows what day to go, and they can take the extra care needed on a day that otherwise would be quieter. They have a few shops but none in London.
Thank you for your replies! I have been doing a bit of googling and it seems more difficult than I had hoped. I'm used to almost every restaurant offering multiple gluten free options. Maybe I'll just have to take my nephew out for gluten free fish and chips before we leave Vancouver! As for the rest of the meals in the UK, I find the grocery stores have lots of options so we should be fine.
Thank you! I love the food and Marks and Spencer- we tend to do a lot of picnics if its not raining! Will check out that fish and chips place.
There is a venue search tool on the Coeliac UK website
https://www.coeliac.org.uk/gluten-free-diet-and-lifestyle/venue-guide/
This only covers restaurants etc accredited by them but is maybe a starting point.

Most restaurants in the UK do offer multiple gluten free options, the problem is that you're interested in fish and chips, a dish that is more commonly bought (and better quality) from a dedicated "chippie". These places are predominantly take away and serve only fish and chips (plus various other products such as pies, sausages, chicken etc) and do not have the facility to accommodate gluten free preparation as all the fish and chips are fried in the same oil.
You may be able to find gluten free fish and chips in a restaurant but it won't be as good as one from a chippie.
Hobson’s offer gf fish and chips. They’re a bit of a walk from Paddington Station, though. If you’re coming on the Bakerloo, go out the Praed Street exit, cross the road and hop on a 36 bus towards Queens Park. It’s about 3 stops to Porchester Terrace and that’ll be almost just outside their door. Or, you can go to Royal Oak tube station and walk down the hill; less than 5 minutes.
I always ask to have the skin taken off before they batter and fry the fillets. They’re happy to oblige if you prefer them that way.
Thank you all for your help! We will definitely check out Hobsons.
