I am hoping to see a Shakespeare production at the Globe when we are in London in June/July in 2015, but had a question for anyone who has been. I like the idea of the atmosphere of the standing yard but will my kids only see the back of other people and not the performance (kids will be 10 & 13) or should I book seated area?
It depends how tall your children are. The yard isn't raked very much, but the stage is about five feet tall, which helps.
We took our son at 13 and stood. We were very careful to get a place center stage right at the front so we could rest our elbows on the stage. We were enchanted and the play was a wonderful introduction to Shakespeare for my son. Keep in mind that it is a long time to stand up, especially if you don't have the stage to lean against. Depending on the play it might be a bit to ask of a ten year old. Last summer my husband and I again went to the Globe and this time did the seating. This, too, was very enjoyable and even though we were waaaaay stage right we had a decent view. Again we got seats in front so we could lean forward and ease our backs.....bench seats can also get tiring. Was it worth it? You bet. However you go I think the benefits of an introduction to Shakespeare at the Globe is so much better than reading a play in class.
We were groundlings once as adults and it was a very long time to stand! Fun experience but really don't need to do it again.
We always buy tickets for seats now.
The Globe website will post the date tickets go on sale for their summer productions. Last year I set my alarm clock for midnight, London time, of the date they went on sale. Went online right away to get the tickets and secured fantastic seats. The productions will sell out so figure out the date you want to see a play and book it right when they go on sale to get good seats.
You'll have to decide if standing that long and not having a good view is the best thing for your 10 year old, for the reasons given above.
For those reasons, you probably want to book in the seated area.
It's still going to be a long time for your children to sit through Shakespeare.
I've done the seats and it's a long time to site on hard wooden benches. Standing would've been even worse and I can't imagine many children wanting to do it for so long. I'd plan for seats and recommend paying extra for the cushions they rent. It is a great experience though, even for an off play.
My wife and I saw "Julius Caesar" there in June and it was a highlight of the trip. Seats are definitely the way to go -- not only will the kids see more but they will be better suited to hear and take in the Bard's magnificent words. There's no way standing for several hours can enhance the experience.
Do what Anita did and get tickets the day they go on sale. Tickets are available to friends of the Globe before they go on sale to the general public, so the very best seats are already gone by the time most people can get them and the rest sell out fast. We sat in the center of the middle tier and were very pleased with the location. After all of the walking we had been doing, we were glad to get to sit for a while.
Thanks all for the advice. Will definitely go for seats. Cant work out from globe website when they go on sale but will work it out
It's a bit early...if I remember correctly the tickets went on sale some time in early March late February?? Just keep checking back and they'll post the date that they go on sale.
