After we finish the WHW we will take the train to Glasgow. From Glasgow what is the best way to get to Keswick in the Lake District? After the Lake District we plan to spend some time in Wales near Conwy. What is the best way to get about? How about car rentals when you are traveling all over? Can you pick up one place and return in an other?
In advance let me say thank you for taking the time to answer my questions :) Where would we be without the expertise of other travelers?!
by public transport it would be:
train from Glasgow to Penrith then bus to Keswick
bus from Keswick to Penrith then train to Conway
but a car would give you more opportunity to explore at your own leisure
yes, one way car hire is possible with the well known big companies
thank you. I shall now research car rentals and make sure we can drop off in towns we will be near in Wales.
You will find the train times & fares at www.nationalrail.co.uk
At the moment, the line south of Glasgow has been washed away by floods - it will reopen in March. I would pre-book the longer journeys about 11 weeks out with Virgin Trains.
When going from Penrith to Conwy/Conway, you will find that you will have to change trains. You may find it cheaper to buy split tickets with the change point being the place to 'split'. (Conway is a request stop - so tell the guard in advance that you wish to alight).
It is unlikely that you can hire a car at Conway but more likely at Llandudno Junction = 1 mile east. Alternatively, take the train from Penrith to Chester - have a look around or stay overnight & hire car from there.
You could, of course, hire car in Glasgow & drive all the way. This would be useful for getting around the Lake District.
James, you provide a wealth of information. Thank you for your input. That is so helpful and saves so much time from trying to sift through sites on the internet.
