A question for our British friends here......
I want to get a gift card for a friend of mine in the UK. In the States, we can get a prepaid card tied to either Visa, JC or AMEX with a set amount and it can be used anywhere a credit card is accepted.
Do you have anything like that and if so, where can I get one?

More common are cards linked to specific shops - i.e. Boots, John Lewis, M&S etc etc
A John Lewis gift voucher would be more acceptable than Boots or M & S. They can be used in store or online.

I wonder if there is an activation fee and the hidden costs I found on the Canadian 'Visa gift card'. For the small amount I was looking at giving, I wasn't impressed with the cost to my recipient that would have incurred.

Most Visa, MasterCard, AmEx gift cards sold in the US will not work anywhere except within the US. You have to buy special "Travel Cards" that have a much higher level of fees associated if you are wanting to use them for foreign transactions.
