Getting to the O2

We will be in London the last 2 days of our RS BOEngland. On the day we arrive in London…Rick notes in his Itinerary that that evening would be good to see a play. My friend and I have been contemplating going to the O2 to see Mamma Mia the Party which starts @ 6:30 pm.

For those who have been on this tour……would we have sufficient time to get there?

Also I’ve been researching transportation options ….especially for returning to our hotel…Radisson Blu Edwardian Vanderbilt on Cromwell Road since this event lasts 4 hours…. So close to 10:30 - 11 pm. I was looking at the River boat but the return for our date looks to be sold out. It’s been a long time since we’ve taken a tube that late at night. We are 2 women. Is it better to take the tube or get a cab back to our hotel?

I have no information for when your tour ends, but if RS says you'll have time to go see a play, I assume you'll have time to get to the O2 for 6:30. North Greenwich Tube Station is right there at the O2.

I would never think about taking the river boat from Greenwich to Central London at night. It would take forever and have little in the way of views. Cab would not be cheap. Tube is only a half hour (Jubilee from North Greenwich to Westminster; District/Circle to Gloucester Road right near your hotel. I would expect no problems on the Tube for two women travelling together.

The 02 arena was originally called the millennium dome, many thousands including myself visited at the turn of this century, MM02 was/is a mobile phone/cell operator, shortened to 02.

As mentioned above part of the 02 arena roof was split open during the recent storm Eunice.

@Chris, the Jubilee line is a fast modern, high frequency service, tube train every 2-3 minutes, at 11pm London will be busy including public transport.

If there are large events at the 02 TfL (I’m told) stable extra tube trains to deal with the exit surge, you haven’t given the date, if the event is in summertime May - August the sun sets late quite late, with twilight lasting after that.

Dennis….the date would be Thursday, June 30. I’ve looked at Jubilee Line changing at Westminster to District Line …..is that correct? Do the trains stop at a certain point… meaning if we get out of event later than 23:00? Will the split in the tent affect the shops and the theatre?

I appreciate your commentary on what London is like in the later hours.

Thank you,
Chris

You could download the citymapper app to your smartphone when in London. It is free and very useful if you put in where you want to go - it will come up with up to date travel options, tube, bus, walking etc with a map. (it also runs some subscription services for transport, but you are not required to subscribe to these)

@Chris, Midsummer day is 21 June, so your event on 30 June should be a long light day.

The first and last underground trains are on the link below, I assume you are using Gloucester Rd station as a base, yes change At Westminster for District or Circle Line westbound, that section shares the same track, looks like 00:37 hrs is the last departure from Westminster.

Apps are fine, but if you are a visual person and prefer a quick check carry the classic pocket tube map, on paper or on your phone, it works well.

The 02 arena might look like a tent but it’s more substantial than that, I’m sure the roof will be fixed by June, the February storms had a max gust recorded of 122mph, many aborted landings at Heathrow, see the videos, those pilots are extremely skilled.

Here is a nice YT video, uploaded 3 months ago, shows North Greenwich station at 11:30 pm, after an 02 event, working from platforms back to outside the arena, lots of people, everyone’s had a nice evening, plenty of room, well organised and flowing.

I want to thank everyone who contributed to this thread….I emailed the tour office and it looks like we won’t be checking into our hotel until 4-5 pm and then have an orientation….so at this point we are feeling very rushed given our day starts with a train from York to London, then a bus tour of London and tour of Westminster Abbey.

Prior to my email we were going to take the tube there and return based on all the help from everyone.
