Is it easiest just to hire a taxi? We are starting a walking holiday in St. Ives and will not have a car. Thanks!
A taxi will cost a fortune.
Catch the hourly bus 56 at about xx.20 until the last at 1833 (Monday to Saturday), 2 hourly Sunday.
From Newquay you can either get a train changing at St Par and St Erth, (the train stops outside Newquay Rail Station before the Bus Station).
or,
catch any of several bus routes to Truro Bus Station and then the half hourly T1 route to St Ives Malakoff Bus Station, widely regarded as the most scenic Bus Station in the UK.
The entire bus journey will cost £5.

The train runs every 2 hours and costs £12,60, no advance fares, buy on the day from the machine at the station. No advance fares, see here for timetables-

As a compromise you could take a taxi to St Austell station, about 15 miles. From there the train will take about 70 minutes with a simple change at St Erth for £12.60pp.
A taxi will be the easiest and quickest by far. It will cost around £90-100 so it depends on your priorities whether that is good value for you.
Those are all very helpful options, thank you all!
