Getting from Eastbourne to BAttle Abbey and back by public transport

I am staying in the Landsdown Hotel in Eastbourne later this month and want to visit Battle Abbey for the day. I'd originally thought of using the bus as I have a bus pass, but am increasingly beginning to feel that is a non runner... I can catch the 99 bus from Eastbourne to Bexhill which is a 20 minute service. I then think I need to catch the 95 from Bexhill to Battle which is not very frequent. Am I missing something here and are there any other buses that will get me from Bexhill to Battle ?

Alternatively I can catch a train changing at St Leonards. This seems to give a lot more flexibility. Is there any advantage to buying the ticket in advance or is it the same price to buy at the station on the day?

Any advice or words of wisdom from isn31c gratefully received!

I don't remember Battle ever having a decent bus service, when I worked at Tunbridge Wells- the train service was just too good.

You could go one way via Bexhill, the other way on the every 30 minutes route 51 to Tunbridge Wells (journey time 1 hour 47 minutes) then the hourly route 1066 (wonder where they got that number from) at xx37, journey time 1 hour 12 minutes- a new County contracted route which started last year.

So a 3 hour + journey.

But the train is only £10 return, fixed fare, bought today or last minute-57 minute journey on the xx.09 out, 46 minutes on the xx.13 back, no time restrictions. £6.65 with a railcard.

Thank you for such a comprehensive answer Stuart. It confirms what I was coming round to - train is the answer.
